2ZZ idle problems

Hi Guys, I've just got my car back with a new factory engine fitted (it's a 2011 car so drive by wire).

Running great but when I come to a stop with the engine hot the the idle surges from about 500rpm to 1200rpm constantly. If I kill it and restart it, it's fine again.

I can take it back to the garage but if it's something simple, it'll be much less hassle to do it myself. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I've got an K series S1 which was having exact same issue, I changed the IACV today and problem solved. Not sure if its the same set up on the Toyota.

Cheers

Check your accelerator pedal connection. Sounds like it's hunting for the signal from the pedal or it has a short. Pull the plug off the throttle body in the engine bay and check it's clean and dry and that none of the pins are bent over. Unlikely to be at the pedal end as that shouldn't have been touched.
If that is all OK then If you have access to a fault code reader plug it into the OBD plug, under the dash IIRC, and see if it pulls up any codes. From that you will be able to tell what is giving the issue. It could be something in the intake that is sticking or not opening/closing properly until power is cut from it.

Where are you based as I have a OBDII reader that shows throttle position and pedal read back amongst other things if your in Aberdeenshire.

Thanks guys, I'm in Glasgow. I've got an OBD reader but didn't think to plug it in as there's no fault light showing.

if it were constantly doing it Id say the inlet manifold gasket is leaking air in, the fact it goes away when you restart the car would point me to the throttle body at fault.

Mike, my car used to do that too.

New throttle fixed mine, after trying a throttle body first!

If you need to try a throttle body I have one in the garage you can borrow :thumbsup

Thanks guys, it's only done about 80 miles on the new engine so I'll see if I can get some more done before the weather turns.its under warranty so I can always get it back to Craig to look at (warranty company will love me  )

My Exige sticks at 2,000 rpm when I come to a stop. I need to blip the throttle to make it go back to 900rpm.
What I have done before is - remove the jubilee clip and hose into the throttle body and squirt carburettor cleaner in
Works a treat ...... for a wee while !!

that sounds like the inside of your throttle body has a layer of gunk inside sipping your butterfly from closing properly. Might be worth pulling the air filter hose off and having a look.

Or back to the original answer we gave on this, check if it sticks with engine off...

Put the reader on it. I think you'll find a misfire issue. Unplug each injector at idle and find the one not affecting the motor.

'Hope not, it was a misfire that killed the original engine
