Play in my steering rack

Post by The_Rossatron » Mon Oct 16, 2006 10:17 am

Usually I have to problems with the words "play" and "rack" being used in the same sentence but not this time.

Anyway I have an MOT advisory telling me as such and wondered if I'll need to replace the whole thing?

I didn't speak to the MOT man myself as I got someone else to take care of it all for me so don't have any details really.

Can you tell its worn while driving?

Do you need a geo?

If the answer is no to both then I would leave it for now. Get it changed when you get your Geo done saves doing it twice....

Apparently you can get them re-conditioned at reasonable price, dunno where though.

I can't feel a thing when I'm driving steering feels tight to me.

Had a geo done when I got my rear tyres fitted about 6 months ago.

Would I need to change the entire rack then when it's "feelable" when driving?

IIRC it's the nylon cups at the end of the rack that wear and these can be replaced. Apparently it is possible DIY but I don't know where you would get the spares from...

When stationary there should be no discernable play in the steering. Worn rack will show a few degees movement and a knock (although this cam be just the UJ in the steering column).

I had my rack reconditioned a while ago.
Fairly sure it was these guys: http://www.powersteeringservices.co.uk/startup.html

Cost about 150 quid I think.
