Lotus say that charge cooler wouldn't be possible on the Exige V6....Komotec disagree obviously!
Launching their charge cooled kit now with alleged 460bhp..
Who's up for it?!

That's a pretty serious power hike is it not? Not bad £/HP

Up from 345bhp Ferg so pretty big hike indeed.....gearbox wouldn't last long with that.....

Actually not so sure it will make much difference to the gearbox - gearboxes fail due to torque, not power (generally) - I assume that all the charge cooler doesn't increase peak torque, but stretches it higher up the rev band by allowing more boost?
Cheers,
Robin

That reminds me, Robin. James asked about power V's torque the other day. Can you level an explanation / analogy suitable for an 8 yr old? Thanks

I think that I remember Robin giving a simple explanation.
"Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you move the wall."

If you want something to move, you need to shove it. You can either shove something very hard, once, or you can shove it lots of times but not so hard.
Torque is how hard you shove.
RPM is how many times you can shove.
Power is the product of the two. More power is either shoving harder or shoving more times.
Cars are shoved by engines.
Golf balls are shoved by golf bats, swung by people in silly jumpers (presumably for increased thermal efficiency, and to weaken opponents with uncontrollable laughter).
If Campbell hits his golf ball 400 yards in one swing, he has lots of torque. But he can only do that once per hour because it takes a whole hour to walk 400 yards when you're 50 years old like Campbell.
James isn't as strong as his dad, and can only hit his golf ball 100 yards. BUT, he is young and his knees still work, so he's much faster. James can run ahead and hit his ball again another 100 yards, and another 100, and another 100 before Campbell catches up.
James has a quarter of the hitting power (torque), but can apply it four times as often (four times the RPM) and they both end up at the 400 yards mark in the same time. Both have output the same power.
However, James will expend more energy over the whole day because he has to walk home from the golf field because there are two sets of Golf clubs in the pax seat of the S1, because Campbell still can't admit he's going to sell UJI and keep the Evora. Fisiks = applied man maths.
Hope this is useful.

Great analogy
Graeme, you seem to know a disturbingly large amount about golfists

I'm excellent at golf. You just need to remember the angle of incidence = angle of reflection. Except the hole with the windmill; that one is all about timing.

They never said it wouldn't fit just that it wasn't economical to fit it. The amount of body work to remove to install the lotus get up makes it a significant challenge. Mechanically there is a lot of differences between the Evora 400 (3-11) and Exige V6 and not just the obvious.

Is it on their site? I cannot see anything.

I'm Aware of that Mike, I'll work on my phrasing in future....Just thought it was good to see Komotec developing the option for existing V6 when Lotus wont. Thats not to say the next variant of Exige won't have it as an option. Not seen any prices for the Komotec set up but given what the 430bhp upgrade costs i'm sure that the charge cooler set up will be somewhat eye watering....
They state torque figure of 480Nm which is 80Nm up on standard so I imagine it will be quite noticable.
They are also developing a 500bhp variant which will include uprated pistons and rods.
Also in development is a twin clutch gearbox... due out in March next year.
Not officially launched yet Steve, they are releasing it at the upcoming motor show in Luxemburg 20-22nd of this month. (its on thier FB page and here:-

Torque is Nm = Newtons x metres.
Power is rate of energy conversion W = J/s = Joules per second.
The two are entirely analogous in terms of describing how an engine makes a car move; i.e. for a given car you can do the maths using just Torque and then do the maths again using just Power and you will end up with exactly the same answer (speed/distance/time type calculations) - engines don't develop Torque & Power as separate things - they are the same thing measured at different points in the system [the maths with Power is much easier than the Torque equations, though, as you need to factor in all the gear ratios, wheel diameters, etc. with Torque].
Torque is a twisting force, so you could explain it to a child as the difference between turning a volume dial (low torque) and opening a jar of pickles (high torque).
Power can be used to describe things like light bulbs - a brighter light bulb uses (converts, strictly) more power than a dim one.
There are no doubt some real world devices that could demonstrate the torque/power relationship - for example a bicycle with gears - easier gear->less torque at pedals->less power for same rate of pedalling.
Cheers,
Robin
