Audio - no sound from speakers

Hi,
My car hi-fi still runs, but there's no sound from any speakers. For about 6 months leading up to this there was a popping noise whenever I removed the face-plate, which may have some relevance.
Any thoughts on what it could be?
I tried to remove the unit to check the connections but can't get it out. Is there a knack to this? It's a non-OEM unit - when I get a chance I can post a picture in case it helps re removal.

There have been a few reports of this happening, and conjecture is that there are an unusual number of solar flares occurring recently.

Eh? You're pulling my leg, surely. I was thinking it might be something more prosaic, e.g. loose wiring.

You lot are really helpful tonight.
Anyone got any good Elise-hi-fi-related advice!

Ask anybody on here Scott, whatever emerges from the tips of my fingers is always utter gospel.

Katie says: "Have you tried turning it off an on again?".
I say: "Do you have a multimeter?" If you are able to get the thing out of the dash board then you should measure the resistance between each pair of speaker wires in the connector. You should see 4 ohms or maybe 8 ohms each side. If you do, and the connection to the head unit is good, then you've lunched the amplifier in the head unit, probably.
Cheers,
Robin

Here's my unit:
Other than a couple of tiny screws either side of the face-plate connection I presume it should just pull out. I can jiggle it a little but can't get leverage on anything to force it out.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Slide something thin and long down the sides; you need to "push back" the tabs in the side, shown in the pic below. It might not be an identical cage but they are all pretty similar.

Might be worth hitting the reset button, think it's visible in the picture shown.
Stereo in my Evora randomly stops putting out any sound from time to time and a full rest sorts it.
Worth trying anyway....

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. The reset button didn't help, but I got the unit out and resistance on three pairs of speaker wire is good (4 ohms), but the fourth is bad. Does broken wiring to one speaker cut all sound - if so am I able to isolate that one - or could the amp be kaput anyway?
It's the left rear speaker so looks like the passenger seat needs to come out to check the wiring at the speaker end.

I wouldn't have thought the amp would go into shutdown because of a missing speaker, but maybe it will. Anyway, you probably want to fix the wiring to the speaker before working out why the amp is in shutdown (or whether it's just dead).
Cheers,
Robin

Swapping with the head unit from my other car has confirmed that as well as checking that speaker/wiring I need a new unit.
Anyone recently bought one - inexpensive yet decent sound (for an Elise) - they would recommend?
Thanks,

I've got a JVC KD-DB52 which I like. Looks like you can pick that up for about £100. Alternatively if you want a cheaper option, I've got the alpine that came out of the V6 which I'd let go for £40
