fibre glass repair

Post by Dipper » Tue Apr 09, 2013 12:13 pm

next daft question!

i need to cut out a section of my boot floor due to it being melted by the exhaust. should be a fairly easy repair but ive never worked with fibreglass before. the hole will end up @ 10" square. how do i stop the fibreglass sagging into the hole? screw the fibreglass mat into place first?

You will need to support a patch that size. Ideally you will want to make up a support that has the same contours as the boot floor using MDF or similar =. That or get hold of a boot section larger than the hole from a damaged clam and cover it with cling film. Secure it in place and lay the fibreglass onto that.
I still have the damaged rear clam from my 111R, if you need it I can cut out a section and SE pony express it to you.

Can you post up a picture of the bit of boot floor that is damaged. That way I can get the right bit.

Should be able to match that section for you. Should be far enough away from the damaged part of the clam.

You could get a good finish by making laying up a patch panel off the car on a flat surface, single skin, then secure over the hole underneath with small screws, apply repair and then remove screws. Self supporting repair. :)
