Central Locking Gubbed

Took the car out of its hibernation early and parked it in the drive, locked and alarmed it with the fob. After doing some work in the garage I went to open the car with the fob as normal and could hear the central locking motors trying to fire but not quite managing to pop the buttons. Tried this a good few times but as it was getting dark and frosty I decided to give the AA a call who sent a nice man who proceeded to use a high tech solution to gain entry and pop the button on the drivers door
Battery has been on a Maintenance charger since October last year and the AA man confirmed it was in rude health.
Next day (with the roof off this time) I locked the car using the fob again with the same result - it locks fine (both doors) but it won't open. Checked and replaced the Cental Locking fuse (22) but this made no difference - didn't think it would as the system is locking fine. I have now removed the fuse and I'm just using the key to lock the door and the fob to set the alarm. Anyone got any ideas to try?
Cheers,
John
