(I'm probably the last in the world to discover this, but for the uninitiated-)

Don't park the car facing up a steep hill.

Opened my boot to find a foot of water after yesterday's rain. This cannot be good for the handling.

So that'll mean no drain on the rear of the boot-lid channel? Doh!

Phoned Lotus: " this was an option we looked at but decided a hole would add too much weight"

(Ok made that last bit up)

S1s do have a drain hose - dunno what the arrangement is with the S2... Maybe have a root around in case there is one and it's got disconnected (happens to mine all the time)

you know the chains and rope section in B&W (shut it) well they offer thin fish tank tube and thick tube, it is the thick one.

Man this post has SS (shug smut) written all over it.

Does the rain channel in your boot opening, just behind the bootlock, have a hole?

If so, then underneath this hole, should have a 90deg plumbing elbow section and a length of hose attached to it - this runs off to a wheelarch.

If not, and you still have a hole - you'll have water pissing into the boot. If yours is a 99 car, it's got the moulded in boot, as opposed to the boot bag, right?

If so and there's no hose, but a hole, it'll get affy moist in there.....

OK, time to really embarrass myself!

Yes it does get very wet, yes it does have a bit of tube with a plumbing fitting. But it is not connected to anything and until now I had no idea what it was for or at least thought it was for something else.

When I got the car it was sitting in the boot and I thought it was a home made gadget for filling cooling system.

If that is not bad enough I took it out at the end of last summer on one of the many occasions on which I was drying out the boot liner and sat it on top of the engine. Fair- enough if you remember to take it off the top of the engine when you put the carpet etc back in or at least before you drive off.

Inevitably I didn’t.

I got about 5 miles before I started to choke and noticed black smoke belching out the back. Inevitably the tube had fallen onto the exhaust manifold and started a minor fire. Lots of nice toxic burning plastic type smoke.

Still only damage was to the tube and to my fingers when I reached in to pull it out and throw it into a conveniently close river. Could have been so much worse!!

I do still have it although it is a wee bit worse for the fire so I think it is off to Sanjoy’s ropes and chains section to replace the melted / incinerated section of tube.

Its going to make a difference having a semi dry boot!!

MY04 Elises had a drainage hole added at the rear of the bootlid gutter but this has been removed again since it causes the paint to bubble on the clam to the rear of the bootlid. If anyone stil has the drainage hole, you should be able to get it filled and the cup removed by Lotus. Mine has been done.

BTW, this means that it is best to avoid parking facing uphill, though you can adjust the boot so that it pulls tighter to stop it leaking. Just loosen off the striker pin and move it down a little.
