Scottish Elises

What are people's thoughts. The car is to be used by Lindsay day to day, but we will be tracking it? I really don't want tyres going off after 6-7 laps

I was thinking Kumho's but I can't find any for sale. advan neova's are great but are a couple of hundred more a set.

What are T1R like?

Anyone tried the AD08?

I do have 111s wheels think I can run 225 rears?

I have AD08's on at the moment Scotty. Good all rounders, but not had a chance to try them in the wet yet.

Ten laps at KH with N3 is fine, so twenty mins with a standard car should be no problem. I have 225's on the rear on standard S1 five spoke wheels, so they will be fine on the wider 111's.

T1r's are good on the road, especially in the wet. I used them on track and they melted after a few laps.

Advan Neova would be the right compromise. Or get a spare set of rims for track only.

T1-Rs are brilliant all weather tyres but even I can melt them on track

Toyo r1r's might be a good shout also

KU31's are no longer made, there's a few reviews of KU39 on seloc which are the replacements. Not sure about stock levels though so that might not help!

I have two sets of wheels, one set with advan neovas and one set with Kumho KU39s. On road I notice little difference between them, although the advans wear quicker than the Kumhos. The Kumho's are fairly decent on track. Don't overheat like Toyos, and are not the most grippy tyre, but are nicely progressive near the limit,.. and don't wear out too quickly.

Camskills were good for me to get the Kumhos.

I found the Kumhos to be not quite as good as the T1Rs in the wet (but the T1Rs are excellent in the wet). Other than that they are great.

When I first tried T1Rs it was after the BFGoodrich G force profilers (no longer made) which were amazing and had stiff sidewalls so you could run low pressures. I tried the same low pressures in the T1R and they were rubbish. I was new to Elises and didn't think to up the pressures . This formed my early opinion of them which wasn't good.

I went back to T1Rs later in my Elise life and used them with higher pressures and found them much better.

I don't know how much power your Elise has, but I'm guessing it's less than the 211 . In this case I would trade the T1R's going off a bit and melting when hot, for knowing they are completely reliable and predictable in the wet (as well as when they're melting). I don't think the Kumhos are that predictable when wet, and never entirely trusted them.

For £200 odd a set fitted I'd put up with T1Rs melting on the odd hot trackday at KH as you get more wet days than hot anyway

PS Dom, what's your opinion on the Kumhos in the wet?

The T1-R's are great all round tyres, and i find them quite progressive on track, but the sidewall flex does take a bit of getting used to. As such they dont feel the the sharpest on turn in, but overall grip is pretty good I'd say. They are being phased out by Toyo in favour of the T1-S.

I have bought a set of KU39's to go on the Audi soon, as they seem well reviewed and good value for money - can't comment further yet though...

Not bad to be honest. I don't use my car as a daily runner, so it does not see to much wet weather use. My car also wants to go sideways all the time, especially in the wet (or is that the driver ). I did run Toyos on my first elise, but that was too long ago to really compare. I'd say I have been happy with the Kumhos, and feel confident in the wet with them. The performed well at Tut towers trackday, (which was very wet); only being passed by the two 211's, and Kenny (who I wanted to follow for a bit)

I think McKean ran a set of Kumhos too, and was fairly complimentary of them. I tried to source them for my S1 and also our Skoda but that specific tyre had gone out of production and prices were just silly. So Toyo T1-Rs it was once more - on both cars - and they'd have replaced runflats on our MINI too if Uniroyals hadn't been even cheaper.

I really need a loyalty card for Toyo...

McKean used to say they were as good as he needed. Some took the view that meant they were good enough for them, I took it that meant I needed something better.

LOL. Depends how you define "better", of course!
