how easy is it...

To change a manifold & flexi without a lift?

As you know I'm in the schtuck wih MOT issues etc, and my new parts will hopefully arrive by the wnd of the week. Lawrence is choka for the next wee while, and I'm forever pestering Mac, and I'm sure he's got better things to do...

Can I do this job with axle stands? How much more difficult (if at all) would it be?

Cheers,

Greg

Doable - bit of a PIA, but doable... Downside is lying under the car to undo the flange (fnarrr). Just wear eye protection, as you'll be under what you're trying to undo, and soak overnight in WD40 (the nuts, that is).

Oh yeah, and pray none of the studs shear, cos then it's a real PIA.....

You replacing both bits BTW? Manifold and flexi/downpipe?

You'll still need to split the middle flange, but you have less to worry about if you shear it off...

Yep Shug, both manifold & Flexi being 'upgraded' to S2 spec.

i guessed it would be an access issue more than anything... so I suppose that's some consolation that its doable

Yup - I did it on the driveway when my standard flexi died (now long since departed for a 4-2-1)

Happy to lend a hand with the change over Greg.

If the flexi is shot then you can probably take the manifold bolts out, undo the de-cat section then get it out without doing the dreaded top flexi bolts. I recon the way to go would be just take the angle grinder (or hacksaw) through the down pipe somewhere near the right-angled section. You can then lift the manifold out from above and the lower flexi section out from below.

Having tried (and failed) to loosen the top flexi bolts on mine I’d avoid that if you can.

I’m probably missing something but can’t think what??

Did mine of the drive without a jack you big poof. Also did ScottD's on his drive in the pouring rain (With a jack) jack and stands are deffinatly worth it, make access soooo much easier.

I would have a crack at the flexi/manifold studs straight away. Just give them hell until the shear or undo. Mine and Scott's both came undone without too much grief. Access to the inner ones nearest the engine is poor to say the least.

Biggest problem will be your lambda sensor. You have a new one right? Please tell me you have a new one....

If you haven't (Which I am guessing is the case ) I have a shiney new one here that is ready to be posted to lawrences to replace the one I borrowed. I could send it to you and then you buy one and send it to lawrence. You will need ato retain the lambda plug bit and heat sock thing to swap over as this one has no plug. (Or your old one might come out. But I doubt it... )

Don't forget new gaskets for the head/maifold manifold/flexi and cat/flexi joints, they are pence form a rover dealer or £ from geary. May as well do it properly....

ya cheeky (but helpful) sod you! I do have a lambda coming with the manifold. Good shout on the gaskets, I'm guessing a S2 elise Manifold requires 'S2' MGTF gaskets? Come to think about it, isn't it just the manifold-flexi joint that's different, and does that boy need a gasket?

I would think MGTF gaskets would do but the TF has a VVC engine... Get all of them they are only about £2.50 each, then take them back if you have any left over.

The flexi/manifold does have a gasket on the S1/MGF I would imagine the S2 one does too.
