Brake woes

Post by Lazydonkey » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:06 pm

For the past few days the brake pedal on the vx seems to be "lazy" and after my hour long commute it gets so bad that i have to hook my foot under the pedal to get the brakes off.

Pads and discs were new under a thousand miles ago and none of the discs are hot to touch after a run...... Although it does seem to get worse as the car heats up. Front calipers were refurbished at the same time as the discs and pads went on.

Don't think it's a sticking caliper as my guess is that the hooking trick wouldn't work if it was.

Any ideas? Also is this something I should consider p&l for?

Thanks in advance

Could be an issue at the master cylinder rather than at the business end. Simplest thing to check first is that the spring on the pedal is still connected properly.

How is the pedal's own pivot bush designed? Elise clutch "trunions" get very stiff although maybe not sufficiently so to prevent full return action (they do hold the pedal down a little though, IIRC).

P&L no go Martin unless it is a mechanical fault as opposed to wear.

Campbell, the brake pedal trunion works exactly the same as the clutch one but doesn't wear in the same way as the pedal doesn't move as far.

Most like a master cylinder problem but you'll probably struggle to get it on P&L unless you can show the AA man you've got no brakes so can't continue.
