Ask Rich ;)

Seriously, now we know definitively how to lock the crankshaft, it's not great biggie. Might want to replace tensioner, it's only an extra minute when you're in there anyway...

You need a cut down 22mm socket to do the crank bolt back up.

I lock the crank with 5th gear and the handbrake when attacking the pulley bolt. You don't need to lock it otherwise, because while the engine is at 90-degrees BTDC and the pulley is removed there is no way of turning it anyway ...

Robin

We tried this with Rich's car and there was such a spring in the system that we couldn't get the torque - clutch springs?

I managed it fine keeping it in gear with the handbrake on. - had to position it carefully so that it was in the right place once the torque had taken up all the slack!

not a crazy big job, and plenty of folk on seloc rant about how important it is to change the tensioner. - i couldn't get hold of one in time, so let the old one in place - i'll change it next belt change.

A.

my only difficulty was getting a socket / torque wrench into the gap beween the pulley nut and the chassis - i had to buy a new skinny socket!

Handbrake worked for me too.

It can be done at mine - just a mater of timing - I would say next saturday but I think you have prior engagements.

PS: You can buy a belt and tensioner kit from PTP

Problem I had was getting enough leverage - I ended up being pushed back across the garage trying to get the torque applied (=v.v. sore nips)

Ended up blocking my feet out with some breeze blocks so the torque bar went forward rather than me backwards.

WTF were we doing wrong then? We had it in gear and handbrake on but there was too much spring in the clutch cover plate and it just compressed the springs then popped back. I do have an AP Racing clutch but that should make no difference should it?!?!?

Rich

Confused faction....

Dunno to be honest.

Fd to me to try it - I did and it worked - albeit a wee bit awkard with no elevation possible.

You didn't have someone with their foot on the clutch did you :-))))))
