air filter cleaning. will this work????

Post by mckeann » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:02 pm

Hi folks, i have a K and N filter on my car now, and have noticed the induction noise has changed pitch recently, i believe because its choking up. I want to give it a clean before i go down south again, but i cant get hold of a K&N filter cleaning kit.

I have an ITG cleaning kit, will this be ok. I imagine all the companies want you to buy there own stuff, but surely dirt cleaner and oil is all pretty much the same??

I use a K&N cleaner on my hurricane. It's just a solvent to remove the oil and then filter oil afterwards. As long as they are both for cotton filters it should be ok.

Give it a blast with the solvent, then put it in a bucket of warm soapy water to shift the clag. I use a toothbrush to help but be careful of the gauze.

Once it's clean rinse it with loads of clean water (From the inside out) and let it dry naturally. Re-oil it once it's dry and the jobs a carrot

Probably not, the foam things would be more delicate than the cotton efforts. Have a go and you can be the guinea pig...

You're probably down to 160bhp like tut... ;)

Remember you're sooking much more air than the rest of us (maybe Jamie excluded) :) so you need to clean the filter more often.

I used to clean the hurricane every 1K miles (just dry clean and re-oil, proper clean every 3-4 K). No excuse 'cos it was so easy in the K, guess it's a little bit trickier to get at in the Hunda.

you have to drop the wheel arch liner out to do it. no big deal really. It definately makes a difference, i can hear the induction note has changed.

Yeah, you have to do the same with mine. Pain in the arse, but really worth it. Take it you went K&N to avoid any worries about the foam filter breaking up? I think my pipercross will be getting replaced with a big bore K&N at some stage....

thats just what sinclaires put on it. The ITG wouldnt fit, and they got more power from K&N over the hurricane, so i went with that. does seriosuly strangle power when dirty tho
