Flickering Speedo

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this site and was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem.......

I have a mark 1 elise and recently the speedometer needle has started to flicker whilst driving. I removed the display and checked the cables going into the back of it and they looked ok (although there were numerous cables and I couldn't be sure which one the speedo cable was).
The rev counter is working fine though.

Any ideas what the problem could be as it's proving a real pain in the arse. Also I plan to sell the car in the next week or so and I don't want anyone to think that I've been tampering with the speedo cable to affect the mileage (which I haven't).

:welcome

Have you checked the speedo sensor? Passenger side rear wheel, there is a toothed ring with a sensor right next to it. Dunno about access though. Does anything else flicker at the same time?

I've not but I'll have a look at it tonight.
Nothing else is flickering apart from the speedo.
Some journeys it works fine.
Some it flickers on.
Others it doesn't work at all.

Cheers for the info though - I'll check it out and let you know how I get on.

Think I had similar problems a few years back. Was diagnosed as earthing issue as I had had teh clam off.

Any work been done ot hte car prior to the problem ?

I've had the rear clam replaced after some walloper ran in to the back of me!!
The problem arose a few weeks after this repair work was done.
If this is the issue then do you know what I should be looking to do to sort it??

start with the speedo sensor, as Rich suggested (including the cables). Then clean up the earth strap in the engine bay - shock might have disturbed it in a rear-ender...

Thanks for the help guys.
I'll give it a go tonight (weather permitting) and I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers.
