The S1 uses a different connector that is inherently water tight, as is the ECU enclosure itself. I would guess the Rover MEMS is IP67 rated, though cannot be sure.
I would say the S2 connector counts as splash proof, as is the enclosure - it has a vent hole in the back that will allow moisture ingress and the wire crimps in the connector are only shielded by the splash cover integral to the loom plug. If water gets under these, it runs down the crimped terminals and pools in the actual connector. I've had one or two apart that have suffered from water ingress and typically there are signs of corrosion on the connector legs where they connect to the circuit board, so I assume that water can, eventually, run past the pins in the connector, though there is no hard evidence of that.
Anyway, we know from bitter experience that one way or another, if you run with the rain cover off, you end up in trouble ...
