Gearbox Linkage?

Went for a drive last night (S1 111S) and had a bit of difficulty getting it from 5th to 4th.

I do not think it was me that was causing the issue but was wondering whether it is the start of a gearbox linkeage problem.

The car is into MMC for it's MOT and wondering whether there is a quick check that they can perform to see whether it is the linkage.

Any suggestions whether I am on the right track or could it be something else?

Cheers

There are clips holding the cable outers in place at the gearbox end - one of these coming adrift could cause a selection problem like you describe....

Shug,

Cheers for that - will pass it across to MMC to have a look at if it continues as well out of my technical capability. That would involve me getting my hands dirty and taking the clam off as well

Just hope they do not charge a fortune for it but will mention it to them.

Wish I was more technically minded but there is only so much this tired old brain can handle

Cheers

No clam-off shenanigans. Just the undertray (they could probably peek in past one of the rear wheels and see if it's seated okay)

Will take about an hour to remove the undertray if it's been off recently. Linkage is pretty simple and easy to get to, the clips are at the ends of the cables.

I changed the linkage bushes without a jack.....

Car is in for it's MOT anyway on Thursday so it is a clam off job for the exhaust.

Will get them to check it then.

The clam doesn't come off to change the exhaust - the only two common clam removals are for engine (if taking out of top) and for windscreen (front clam, obviously).

Robin,

quite correct but a typo as meant to say undertray rather than clam. I would hate to see how much more MMC would charge for the MOT if it was the clam :P

Arf, I kinda wondered if that wasn't what you meant but was being distracted by wife children and kittens this morning so not totally on the ball :-)

Car was in for it's MOT and passed no problem.

They had a look at the Gearbox linkage and could not determine anything wrong.

It may have been my ham fistedness then as I had not been in the elise for a couple of weeks due to being away on business. We may be taking it up the west coast tomorrow so will have time to bond with the car again.

Note to self - must buy a sports cat: removing CAT bypass, fitting MMC cat and fitting bypass again increased MOT by £100.

Note to you: don't take car to MMC for MOT in future and don't get fleeced for £100!
