Won't start - can't hear fuel pump

Post by skellyjohn » Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:43 pm

My car's stuck at the house and I can't get it started. It turns over but doesn't start. The fuel pump doesn't sound like it's usual self - i.e. it's not humming before ignition.

Any clues? I'm supposed to be going down south tomorrow in it. I'm in the AA but don't have Home Start.

Tried the fuel cut off thing -it was ok.

I don't think it turns over if it's immobilised so I dont THINK its that.

Thanks for the help. Keep the suggestions coming please!

Check you are getting 12v accross the Fuel Pump Fuse. If ok, try a good known MFRU.

Mine cranks with the immobiliser off... but I think mine is special.

MFRU is a good call though.

Sounds like the MFRU then - well known for failing suddenly - Shug killed one recently IIRC. Standard Rover part.

I gave the mfru a shake and now I'm getting absolutely nothing - not even turning over. So it's maybe looking like that or the wiring into it.

Thanks for the help.

MFRU contains the starter relay as well so I would replace it or test your input and output voltages.

Still not starting.... :(

I swapped the mfru over and still nothing.

So apart from the fuel pump, I think I've checked everything that's been suggested. Are there any fuses in the front of the car I should be looking at? (please bear in mind I'm the guy that takes my car to a garage when it needs a new wiper blade!)
