Rear A048s

Post by Peter76 » Sun Dec 06, 2009 5:36 pm

How long is everyone getting out of a set of A048s on the rear? I've done about 3200 miles on my current set and they are just about to hit the markers. I've done one trackday and 2 or 3 proper 'runs'. I'm quite surprised as on the run yesterday i found the grip in the wet fantastic once the tyres had warmed up. I'm going to buy new ones, but should i keep these as spares for next years trackdays?

it really depends how u drive and where. I can get anywhere between 200 miles on track and 8000 miles on the motorway.

If u think they're wearing out too quicky, get ur geo checked. Too much rear toe will kill them quickly.

That doesn't seem like that much usage ... the 888's we fitted for FF this year did the full 3000+ miles of hot FF including 3 track days and some very spirited mountain roads, then another 2000+ miles including a few laps of the ring and a complete day at Spa. They are now on the wear markers, but even so that sounds like a lot more miles/use that you have got out of the A048s. I don't do much

Is the wear even across the tyre, outside (too much toe in), inside (too much camber), centre (overinflated) or both edges (underinflated)?

Cheers,
Robin

I got roughly 3500 out the rears on mine before i changed them, that was with two track days and a few runs.

Robin, the wear is even right across both tyres. The geo was done not so long ago when i got new rear track rod ends. I check they are correctly inflated fairly regularly. Will need to find my tread depth indicator which i seem to have mis-placed in my garage. I'm sure someone said that the rears were good for 6000 and the fronts for 9000?

If they're worn even then they've done their job. The only way you'll make them wear less is to use less right foot/avoid donut/wheelspin/etc. :-)

P.S. A lot of people find that they use two sets of rears to one set of fronts; the elise is a pretty light car and unless you constantly drive the car into understeer, the front tyres don't wear all that quickly, so perhaps they were saying you'll get 6-9 out of a set of fronts, which is not out of the question.

Cheers,
Robin

If they've not hit the markers yet then you'll probably get another 1000 out of them. Get your tread depth gauge on them - 1.6mm is still legal and I think the markers are at 2ish

Ah wish i had known this that they were still legal after being on the marker level, mines were a tad above marker level when i changed them, as expected to have worn them out on knockhill but didnt have as much wear as expected due to it being very wet.

Oh well still got them in the hut.

were you running "lts" spec 48's?

You could try MH compound instead which is a bit harder and makes very very little difference to performance, but should give you more miles :thumbsup

The LTS are equivaklent to the normal M compound i believe - thats what we race on in the LOTRDC.

If the markers are at 2mm, then maybe i've got more tread left than i thought. I just assumed these were at 1.6mm. They are LTS spec.

1 hour and 20mins must be a record Scotty! Certainly don't drive as hard on them as you.

Think you might need to look at your slip angles... ;)
