I'm getting a whiney noise coming from behind my right ear. Opened the fuel cap and it changed noise a bit. Sounds like its coming from inside the tank. The noise goes on for a second or two after the engine's off.

So...

does it sound like my fuel pump is knackered?

and...

is it a big job to fix - any cheap remedy?

Thanks.

Fuel pump shouldn't be a big problem, but it's on the left in the tank (IIRC) do you have any other symptoms? Rough running or poor tickover?

There isn't much that can whine from the RHS.

If it's an S1 then whip the back window out and see how that changes things.

It's an S1. It cut out on me twice yesterday for the first time and the noise appeared around the same time.

Is there anything I can put in the tank (additive) that might clear it?

Somebody suggested on SELOC that they die a slow death. Any idea how long it's got?

I really appreciate your help and suggestions, thank you.

How long is a piece of string?

They do, by rep, struggle on for a while, but they can also just conk out. There's nothing that'll clear it AFAIK - if it's clogged then you have to take it out and clean it. If it's shagged, no amount of cleaning will sort it.

If it's already cutting out on you, it may not have long for this world though...

I suggest you put someone else's fuel filler cap on before splashing out any cash ...

It could just be venting past either the rubber seal or the pressure relief valve in the cap.

Not that caps are cheap ...
