We will probably need a little more info first, ie stationary, moving, any at all, stiff, cross gate etc.

Clutch or rather the lack of a clutch. Sounds like your clutch has run it's course.

Clutch isn't disengaging. Could be caused by hydraulic failure, clutch slave cylinder mounting bracket, failed release bearing or collapsed pressure plate.

If not abused, the clutches in these cars should last a lifetime as the car is so light there isn't much load on the clutch. High-rev standing starts (Too Fast Too Furious stylee ;-)) and "power shifting" kill the clutch in short order and you get these symptoms.

I would get someone to verify that the clutch lever is moving in the boot when you press the pedal up and down.

Then check that the slave cylinder is staying more-or-less put, i.e. that the motion from the hydraulics is actually moving the clutch rather than just moving the slave cylinder back and forth on a wobbly or cracked bracket.

If that doesn't reveal the problem, bleed out the old fluid in case it's got air in it (though as discussed recently, this is not all that likely to be the problem). This can be done with just an 11mm spanner and an assistant IIRC - push clutch down with bleed nipple open, close bleed nipple, release clutch pedal, repeat 5-10 times making sure there's plenty of fluid in the hydraulic reservoir under the bonnet - top it up frequently during any bleeding).

If none of that fixes it, you either have a knackered clutch master cylinder (not likely) or a failed release bearing or pressure plate (more likely if you get this far in the diagnostics - either way the box has to come out to reveal the pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing - replace all of them if you replace anything as the labour cost exceeds the parts costs by a fair margin).

Cheers,
Robin

Made it home without any further problems going to go over everything I can as I really don't want to take the box out as I would be forced to but a close ratio box in. ( I heard that MG maestro, montego's had a PG1 with even closer ratio's so I am looking into that) and I have a million other thin gs to splashg the cash on atm

Money on the release arm seizing if it did it then freed off.

Get the one from Eliseparts with the grease nipple (unfortunately, you'll have to split the box off the engine to change it.)
