Bloody car.

Post by pete » Tue Sep 01, 2009 11:18 am

So I'm going to tighten the alternator.

The car is up on blocks and axle stands. The tray is off. The wheel arch liner is out. The back wheel is off.

My cracked rib (OK probably bruised) rib starts screaming so there the car stays until this morning.

I go under the car (not comfortable with the rib but it's improved a bit - enough for KH Friday? Dunno.)

There is an arm through which runs a slot. This slot has a bolt through it allowing the alternator to "swing". I figure undo big bolt, tighten smaller bolt at the end which will move the alternator. Then re-tighten bigger bolt. Right???

EXCEPT THE ARM IS CRACKED. All the way through. Needs replaced.

(Sobs quietly in frustration into cup of tea. 7 months this car was at SLS. You telling me the alternator doesn't come off to change an engine???)

Pete

Looks like my KH place may be up for grabs

I don't know how to post the actual picture but it is described as the Slotted Strap on page 4 Section EG in the service manual. The car is an S2.

Not so good Pete.

You still have a couple of days before KH. I would phone Bell & Colvill and see how long the part would take to get to you. They are normally quick or have been with me. Its only an 1hr job as long as you have the part.

I keep away from parts departments up here as I have nothing but trouble, sometimes waiting more than a month.

That's the bar, crack is near where it bolts to the engine. Off to see Mr Clark.
