Brake Disk Questions

Post by Neil72 » Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:57 am

The rear disks on my Elise appear to be wearing quicker than the fronts......is that normal ?

I would have expected a mid engined car to be less harsh on the front disks but not to the extent that the rears wear out quicker.

Also, does anyone know minimum disk thickness front/rear before they should be chucked and replaced ?

My S2 service manual states: New disc; 26.0mm Service minimum; 24.9mm

I don't recall my rears wearing more than my fronts, too many handbrake turns?

Thanks :thumbsup I'll dig out the micrometer and see what they're at.

Doesn't sound like much wear.....that's only 0.55mm on each side of the disk

My handbrake turn days could be over if that's the case :(

I seem to remember that the 24.9mm minimum is a misprint in the S2 service manual - it should be less but I can't remember the actual value. Try a search on here or on SELOC.

After I posted it I remembered the 'debate' but couldn't remember what the facts were.

Thanks for the reminder and clarification.

Handbrake turns don't wear the brakes; the brakes are fully locked; no wear..... it' s the tyres that get the wear. :thumbsup
