Reasons for cutting out problems on a K?

Post by r055 » Sat Apr 25, 2009 5:37 pm

finally got my car back today and after a drive back from EDI it was fine. stopped off at the local tescos and then on my way home again...

after a spirited pull away from a junction up a long hill, I was driving along low revs and came up to a roundabout and when exiting it I pressed the gas pedal and I felt some hesitation on from the engine. Fuel was reading 18L

I pulled over and then revved the engine until it cut out. Its like its being starved of fuel.
I let it sit for 5 mins and started up - luckily i was just 1/4 mile from old inns shell garage, so pulled in and filled it up with 25 Litres.
had a 5 min drive home and it was fine.
One other significant change was that when I had taken the filler cap of it hissed for a long time - more than usual. but I havn't filled the car up for at least 2 months as its been off the road.

Some of you may remember I had this same problem about 2 years ago (Dezzy, Craig and Scott will remember most). the problem was a fuel tank clogged up with crap and gunge- the tank was cleaned and the fuel pump replaced.

:?: Anyway, is it likely that this same thing has happened again? if so, why am i getting it and no one else? If its sh1tty fuel then why doesnt my other cars get it as I use the same filling stations.
If its not the fuel, then whats it likely to be? What should be my main areas to look for?

just remembered this had happened at the last marie curie trackday half an hour from end.
I had kept the engine ticking over when we were waiting for the red flag to go out and get back on. I pulled away at start and it cut out where I rolled to the bottom of duffus and sat it out till the end when it started again and had no problems since...

.. i put this down to the engine overheating :?

Could be a vaccum developing in the fuel tank - check the small hole on the filler cap isn't blocked up with gunge or similar. Ideally try and "floss" it with a small twist drill or similar.

Next time it stalls, check it won't restart then quickly remove the fuel filler and try again. If it starts immediately, then I would guess tank vacuum problem.
