Brake noise

I'm looking for some suggestions because this is driving me nuts, the story so far is:

2006 S2 Elise - I started getting a grating noise from the brakes around December last year, but only when applying the brakes. Nothing drastic, just a metal on metal type sound. I checked the pads and decided that whilst not worn, they would be fairly soon so changed them (front and back). Since I changed them the noise has not gone away but is slightly less loud than it was. However, they have developed a new 'noise' which is there all the time and is fairly quiet but sounds like the disc is rubbing on the pads on every rotation (sounds like drivers front only but I may be wrong).

I've had the wheels off twice now to see if there's anything obvious. And I have removed the pads, cleaned everything up and still no change. Tonight I removed the wheels again and all I can see is that the front discs are not completely silver - suggesting the pads aren't completely in contact with the discs. I've not noticed any brake fade so I don't think that's an issue but what else can it be? (Rear brake discs seem ok and I think the noise is more from the front.)

I've got Redstuffs on the fronts and a mate thinks it could be that they are just too hard. I'm not convinved because as I said at the start, the noise was there before changing to the Redstuffs. Anyway, the original grating noise came back today, so all I seem to achieved is spending on new brake pads, learning how to change them :thumbsup but still that damn noise  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I am no expert but thought Red stuff were more of a track pad so need heat . My pads grind but a good thrashing with loads of heat solves it, as does following the bedding in procedure :thumbsup

I'm with Noops on the lack of proper use. Don't take offence!

Are your front disks grooved or cross-drilled or plain?

Do you have the pad buffers fitted to the calipers?

Cheers,
Robin

The front discs are cross drilled.

I'm not sure what pad buffers are - sorry, relative novice here. Anything I should be able to see easily?

Sounds like your hoses rubbing off your discs....

Let someone off SE have a listen for you?
Where do you stay?

Had a similar grinding noise after the R was laid up for a few months. Took the advice of the boffins on here and thrashed the living daylight out if it and stood it on its nose a few times. Also drove for miles with left foot gently on the brake. Sorted it. No problems since.

Not sure, mind, that the owners manual would suggest the same course of action.

If somebody was prepared to have a listen that would be much appreciated. I live in Bathgate and work in Edinburgh, but would obviously be happy to travel.
