LED Tail lights

Post by douglasgdmw » Tue Jan 27, 2009 9:58 pm

Noticed the offside reversing light was not working on the Elise which was due to the bulb/connector being dislodged.

After much cursing I decided to take the LED tail light off the car and discovered that the plastic surround has been slightly melted so I cannot get the light back in again properly.

Can you buy the plastic black surround or is it a complete unit? As the car is out of warranty I doubt that Lotus would stump up for a new one :?

Also is it compulsory to have 2 reversing lights for the MOT, its duein May but if I have to pay many bucks for a complete unit may just wait until cash flow is better (Mega bills on the Evo imminent!!).

IIRC, all the lights originally fitted must work. So if the car only had one reversing light as standard, you would only need one, but if it had two, both must work. I could be wrong though ...

P.S. I doubt you can replace just the lens, if that's what you mean, because it's bonded onto the main chassis of the light unit.

However, you can just take a file to the plastic and remove anything that's in the way of it going back together.

Quite a common fault on the LED's unfortunately.

From other stories ive heard Lotus usually replace them under warranty.

This has just happened to my indicator at the rear - it actually popped out and when I went to refit it would not fit. Have got a new unit being sent to me by MSC as the unit has only been on the car for a month
