Quick question about pedals and a few other things

Post by cloggie » Thu Jan 15, 2009 12:13 pm

Been stripping the inside of the car this week trying to dry it out
Unfortunately the carpets had been glued in place which made cleaning it a complete pita
managed to get all the glue off although it took about 6 hours a gallon of petrol to break the glue up and a pack of stanley blades
when i was lying in the driver footwell i noticed a spring hanging down from the accelerator pedal.
Cant really see what its for or where it should go :?:
Another thing is my footrest is bolted through the floor is this right i thought i read somewhere that they were removable?
Also tried to get the cenre consol bit off (not really tried too hard) didnt seem like it was easily done ?
there are a few things im stumped with so here goes
1. the spring hanging from the pedal
2. removing the footrest
3. reoving the centre console
4. how to clean inside the headlight as they are pretty dusty and covered in fingerprints
5. the joins between the rollbar and inside of the door have moved can you get new ones anywhere?
I know i will prob get the "carpets are for gheys" reply but is there any point in refitting carpets to the car as i cant really be bothered doing this every time it gets wet.
do most people have them? , whats it like not to have them?
TIA
Ian.

The only one that I can comment on is the spring. On an S1 one end clips onto the U bracket half way up the throttle pedal and the other end is fixed.

Its an S2...carpets can't make it any "gheyer" than it already is

When I got my car the carpets were held down with valcro, you could try that. It would make them easy to remove next time. I don't have carpets anymore and I perfer it without but what I am going to do is stick a piece of skateboard grip tape on the floor just underneath where the peddles are for a bit of grip when my shoes are wet.

Spring is probably the pedal return spring - will have fallen off. Should be attached as a back-up to the TB return spring in the engine bay. Hooks on at the back of the dash extrusion IIRC - the clip may have fallen off if the spring is hanging.

Footrest should just be velcroed - somebody's been keen if they've gone and bolted it in! Wonder why?

Centre console (plastic bit?) should just be attached with plastic trim screws - it's one-piece in the S2s, but should come free - can't tell you where all the screws are on the S2 one.

Most S1s don't have carpets. Downside - grit in the footwell gets sucked into your eyes at speed with the roof off and it's noiser. Try it for a bit to see if you like it, if not, glue in some plastic bosses and fit proper factory carpets that will come out by just unscrewing those bosses.

I cant check at the moment, but if it is attached to the pedal the other end should clip on to a bracket above, probably on the bulkhead, as it is the return spring so stretches when you press down.

That's the newer straight-pull arrangement, I assume cloggie's (being an earlier car) will have the S1 style bellcrank arrangement.

When you say the footrest is bolted in, do you mean the rest for the driver's clutch foot - I'd guess this should be bolted (fairly sure mine is.)
If you're talking about the passenger side rest for both feet, then this should only be velcroed.

Yeah i mean the passenger one its a double one, are all s2s the same ?
maybe they are all like that on the eary ones who knows ?
It does look like its been fixed since day one though?
Who else has an early S2 with the longtail roof ?
I will need to look but im sure the bit that tenkfeet took a photo of where the spring joins in isnt there on mine, pretty sure the cable doesnt go that way either ?
I have taken the fixing screws out of the centre console but i have no idea how it is getting past the gearstick and handbrake without removing them too.
one other thin does anyone know if the interior light is ftom another car as i have broken the surround running the mike for my handsfree and its haging down on one side?

No, like I said, you have the earlier throttle linkage with the bellcrank. Spring will go in the same direction though - can't exactly remember what it hooks onto, but it'll be in that direction.

Shug what is the point of it ?
I take it its just to help reduce wear on the one in the engine bay?

It's in case the engine bay/throttle body one fails.

I've got a photos of both types on my pc - but I'm ashamed to admit I don't know how to post pictures  - assume I have to set up an account with a photo hosting site first?

In the mean timetime if you pm ( or email me at kevindocherty at hotmail.com ) with your email address I'll email the linkage photos to you.

Kevin

ps once you unscrewed the gearknob and pulled the hardbrake as vertical as possible you should be able to manipulate the console over both fairly easily.
