Me Mintex rear brake pads are rattling to buggry! You wouldn't believe, sounds like a couple of flamenco dancers on the rear clam. Even Robins Elise Parts zorst don't drown it out!
So chanced my luck an emailed Mintex, told em my problem an they got back to me saying they'll send me some anti rattle pads for free.

So anyone got the windy backy tool for the rear brakes that I could borrow in the next couple of weeks?

Long nosed pliers?

Failing that I saw a likely tool in halfrauds on the kingsway. Go to the till on the lhs, face the front of the shop its was at about ankle height somewhere in front of you with the valve spring compressors and other odd tools.

God knows if it'll fit but it looked about right.

Got the one from elise parts at home, you want a shot, give me a shout. Long nose pliers work just as well. Do you have the right thread locks and torque settings?

I am fairly sure that the one from Halfords looks the same as the one Lawrence has BUT he modified one of the heads to have the correct pins sizes and spacing (by turning down the pins IIRC).

Lawrence, is that correct or did the second kit come with the right attachment to start with?

OH and I don't think the anti-rattle pads are for the rear pads but the fronts ... I might be wrong, but I don't recall seeing them fitted to the rears ever and the design of the rears is obviously completely different from the fronts.

I suggest you fit the buffers to the front first - if your rears are rattling we need to work out why ...

The correct rewind tool is available nowadays, IIRC it's Renault pin sizes that Robin has that fit

The winder tool is just a length of bat tapped with two small bolts screwed through to form the pins. I'll post a picture later.

Having just fitted new pads tonight, I can happily confirm that long nose pliers do the job very well.

Looks like a standard wooden ruler to me. I can knock one of them up out of an old bit of wood. Dunno how it will help with fixing brakes tho!

I have a pair of dividers that will do the job perfectly

Stephen, that's not a decent wind back tool - it's a copy of Geary's 'money for old rope' tool

The one being referred to here, is actually quite clever, in that it's a threaded number which braces against the opposite side of the caliper and pushes the piston as it winds - in one move.

(I still use the pliers option though )
