Front Brake Disks

Post by MacK » Wed Apr 19, 2006 2:20 pm

I'm needing new front disks, rears are okay.

Where is the best place to get them (i'll fit them myself) and are there different/better ones to get?

Mine are curently the vented cross-drilled variety......

Edited to add; the pads are okay wear wise, is it okay just to change the disks and leave the pads till they need done?

Cheers

John

EBC turbo grooved (govved and dimpled, not cross drilled) are a better budget bet.
Get new pads though...

Hi Stu,

Are these the Turbo Grooved ones? http://www.eliseparts.com/shop/index.ph ... cts_id=377

I'd be up for them.

On a seperate thing, do you still have some rear tow eyes?

I am considering a pair for myself, and I'm hoping to go to Knockhill tonight, so if your not I could take some over for you for anyone else that wants some?

Cheers

John

John, if Stu's offering the Mutsnuts again - I'd go for these. They are machined by his own fair hand and everyone who's had them fitted raves about the disk quality (plus the spiral grooves look kewl!)

Okay Stu going by Shug's glowing recommenation I will take a pair of 'Muts Nuts Disks'.

What pads would be best with them? And do I really need to change mine, they don't appear to be badly scored, the old disk is relativley evenly worn away.. Someone can check tonight at KH and advise I suppose.

John,

What pads are you currently using?

If they are fairly new you could ask stu to skim them for you.

If it's the OE stuff then you'll be as well tossing them in the bin and getting greenstuff at least.

I'd always do pads & disks at the same time - but you might be fine flatting off the surface of the existing pads if there's plenty of meat?

The pads, well outer ones are at least 5 mill thick.

Rears are fine too, both pads and disks, so am only 'needing' front disks.

If I changed front pads to greenstuff etc would I be better doing front and rears to keep brake balance correct?

I got told at my service that my pads won't last til the next service and my disks are slightly lipped. They are rusty as hell too and wouldn't mind a set of these muts nuts bad boys too. I was also considering the aluminium belled ones that eliseparts have? anyone any thoughts on those, lower unsprung weight etc...

i have the eliseparts ali-belled ones. decent enough disc. i cant say how much lighter it is tho, as i had MMC's before and they were proper light. any steel disc will weigh more than an MMC one though.

I was thinking about selling the bells with brand new rotors and upgrading to AP bells and bigger discs. depends how much i could get for these bells tho

I've gone out and bought the Eliseparts ally bells. Bloody lovely (although they are not on the car yet) Theoretical advantages of lower unsprung weight and greater heat dissipation through the alloy bit. Also, rotor replacement is cheaper, as you just buy the braking surface.

Not 100% sure they are worth the cash though (bought while pissed  )

Stu did manufacture similar, but I dunno what the current situation is with these.

For megabuck options, Geary also sells an AP setup - but that's just rediculous unless the car is running on track for hours at a time on slicks.

Re pads - technically, both ends should be the same. But if you're mixing, then the better pad should go on the front - so you'd get away fine with wacking Greens on the fronts (unless you have Padgids on the back - but I'm assuming you've still got standard pads?)

I have no plans to do any more ally belled discs ,the insurance is shocking. What I am doing is grooving plain discs rather than using turbo grooves, although the turbo grooves have been changed since I used them ,they have less grooves and dimples now,so will be better I think(still not as good as my ones though)

Drop me a pm if you want to know more.

Stu
