Wheels pointing in the same direction.

Post by pete » Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:16 pm

Any suggestions where to go to get a "Do all the wheels point the same way?" check done. My front tyres would seem to suggest that they are sitting slightly bow legged (ie bald on the inside loads of trad on the outside).

I've used Falkland before but it's miles away...

Make a trip to CLCM in Edinburgh, You'll need to book the car in 0131 458 5559. CLCM is just behind Murry Lotus so easy to find

Elise geo is setup this way by design, however a check is always wise periodically in case it's gotten worse. Willie at CLCM is very good indeed but booking essential.

A good trick is to swap the front tyres across the axle when the inner tread goes to about halfway, then you get more overall life out of the tyres.

I'd get it checked Pete, Something certainly seemed amiss with the weight and feel of the steering on Sat; my S1's steering is not that heavy, and yours should be lighter.

Yeah you're dead right. If you saw the state of my front tyres, I mean I have one good one, but only if I could work out a way of slicing them down the middle and then re-attaching the two good halves together again. :D

Why are all these places on the bloody east of this country????

I know a man who will set it up with string, but hasn't worked on elises before (not that it should matter if you have the required settings to give him).

Another place to try is Pro-Grip in Bonnybridge. More of a central location rather than East. I'm sure both Kenny and Ross used them last year when I was trying to book in so they can comment on John's work if they see this. :thumbsup

That's a bad trick if you have uni-directional tyres

No it's OK if they are uni-directional...it's only bad if they are asymmetric...like Pirelli P-zeros, and perhaps Advan Neovas ;-)

Maybe I've misunderstood what you were saying Campbell but if you swap front wheels then the tyres will surely end up pointing in the wrong direction. Unless you have them taken from the rims and refitted. :scratch

Incidentally, front tyre wear seems perfectly even on my car. 18k and still on the original fronts.

Exactly what he means Neil, swap tyres. You need to remove them from the rims and fit the other way round. If unidirectional then you also need to swap sides. :thumbsup
If you just swap the front wheels without removing tyres from the rims then you're wearing exactly the same part of the tyre...just in the opposite direction.
(I think I nearly confused myself there!)

Remember that if you swap tyres over that the wear pattern is totally wrong so don't be surprised if it handles like a dog on lino to begin with :thumbsup

Do you carry it about :?:

:ROFL

I put it down to my silky smooth driving technique :leave

In my defence, I've only put 2.5k on the car since I bought it and I have tried very hard to burn out the old tyres (Bridgestones) so that I can move onto Yokohamas. Still plenty of tread left though, I think there is about 4mm left on the fronts.

What is the average life expectancy for a set of tyres then ?

PS apologies for the slight thread drift.
