Replacing an S1 windscreen - own stupid fault

Gutted! Went on a wee run in the Exige up to Ballater yesterday with G and few others. While trying to find a parking space, I ended up face to face with the local BiB Rangey on one of the back lanes (parked cars meant one lane blocked). Being a polite chap (and figuring making the cops reverse wouldn't go down well), I waved them through. Of course, they took the time to stop and query the lack of front plate... must have fell of again

As it was on the passenger seat, I jammed it down between the windscreen and dash to keep them sweet. Once I parked up, i would seem that I had jammed it too hard and I know have a network of 3in cracks coming from the edge of the screen on the driver's side. Doh! Wish I'd just said I hadn't got one and taken a £30 on-the-spot.
So any, it'll obviously go through the insurance. I know that the front clam needs loosened off and slid forward before the screen can be changed but how have other folk dealt with this? Does the insurance company generally arrange this with a dealer or is it expected that I will sort this myself before the autoglass man makes his visit? Also, seem to remember something about poorly fitting aftermarket screens - is this stll an issue? Insurance company is Admiral if it makes any difference... Appreciate any advice
I guess the easy thing would be to take it down to Ali's but the Elise still needs taken down for its B service too and the logistics of taking two cars down and dumping them both is a nightmare. PITA!!

At least they won't be surpised by what it entails then! When you say the local guy has done it before, does he loosen the clam too? Oh and where is local?

You're not in my neck of the woods are you?

as long as it's done ok and he doesn't break the winscreen (he couldn't possibly refit the clam worse than me) I don't care and no I am down in Kilmarnock, phone your insurance and make sure the place that does it ahs done one before. explain that it's not like doing a fiesta.

My understanding is the fundamental point is shifting the clam a couple of inches clear of the base of the screen. Not something I'd entrust to just any windscreen outfit, so try asking them the open question "so tell me how you think this is meant to be done, then". Anything other than the above, get back on the phone to the insurer!
A trip to MMC will not necessarily be a bad plan.
Or find a bodyshop who've done some clam work and get Autoglass to do the job there with one of the technicians overseeing.

Pretty sure most of the glass places will fit it without moving the clam ... you don't really care, so long as they fit the new windscreen and it's air/water tight.
Cheers,
Robin

i had mine replaced when i got the car a cat c damaged, the screen is quite cheap it only cost so much because as its insurance its price is hiked to the hilt i was getting quotes of over 500 even 700 for the job and that was a few years ago , i found a windscreen company who supplied fitted and traveled 120 miles round trip for i think less than 200 the clam was already off
you can get a heated screen now days and not too expensive either
if your having to pay ,supply your own heated screen and get a comp to fit ?
