Flexi has gone - upgade Opertunity

Post by BiggestNizzy » Mon Jul 07, 2008 4:26 pm

My flexi pipe has gone and my options seem to be
  • repair with a flexi section from partco - cheap and chearfull
  • Stainless steel flexi section - not cheap and your left with a standard exhaust just in a different material
  • Replace with a full stainless steel 4-2-1 manifold - expensive and I hopefully I will get a summer bonus that will pay for it :D
I am leaning towards the later ;)

The elisparts one looks right but doesn't have a flexi section,

the one on the janspeed website looks as if it's just not long enough to reach all the way back to the cat :?

Had a nosey on the elise-shop site and the larini looks nice and shiny

anyone know of any more ? and the pro's and con's of each ?

also as it's fecked I would be needing one sooner rather than the 4 year wait some have experienced

Eliseparts should sell the piper manifold with flexi, and i believe it is a pretty good upgrade, without going to a full solid system and the associated engine mounts....

Its on my shopping list

I have a Janspeed 4-2-1 with flexi . . . the flexi is seperate and replacable, done a fair few miles with it and no probs . . . I have the small bore one which is better for lower powered engines, mines is only 170ish . . .

Still over £100 though - in true pikey fashion I had just the flexi chopped out and a new one welded in for £35 :D

Nizzy :thumbsup Thought it was after getting back in my car.

Did the pikey thing on my clio as the flexi is attached to the Cat on the clio

This is what I have my eye on, I am guessing it's the small bore version I don't have anything near 170bhp so anything big bore would probably be a step in the wrong direction.

anyone fitted one before as it looks a real PITA ?

I've got a piper 4-2-1 fitted, but I got it fitted as part of my engine upgrade package from Dan (former JPS) so couldn't tell you what it's like to fit. But it is the nuts 8)

Never fitted one directly, but have had the manifold off... You may find that the manifold studs unscrew, rather than the nuts, so i'd advise getting a new set of studs to be on the safe side. If the studs come out of the head ok, or the nuts just unscrew ok, it will just be a slog... albeit a dirty one! May need to loosen the driver side engine mount to get the new manifold in, but again this isnt tragic...

Basically, if you need to unscrew anything, make sure you've got new bits to replace them... just in case

I believe that using heat wrap to keep the heat IN the manifold downpipes will increase gas speed and MIGHT give a few extra ponies, but unless you're planning a mega HP engine, I doubt its worth it....

Rich did it and I'm sure he'll mention how the engine bay flooded out smoke like it was on fire, while it bedded in. That said, anything that keeps the temp down by the bulkhead/alternator can only be a good thing. Gordon Wright's totally standard engine produced 140odd bhp with the inlet manfold de-flashed & the zorst de-flashed and heat-wrapped.

I'd agree though, for performance, not worth the hassle, but it'll keep your alt alive longer so I'd go ahead and do it.

Aye, the important bit, however, is that removing the flexi section is a 15 minute job and not the nightmare job of removing the whole manifold ;-) . . .
