Tyre Sizes

Post by Edin430 » Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:35 pm

I know the standard tyre for the front of an Exige is 195/50/16 but would it matter much if I put on 195/45/16's on?

Also, what are the digits after? The tyres I am looking at (to match the rears) have 84w after them... :?:

Thanks

It'll be a lower profile tyre.....the digits after are the speed rating of the tyre.

Lower profile won't matter much I guess when its only 45 not 50...

Does the speed rating matter then? 84w ok for normal road driving?

EDIT - Just checked and I know the W is okay now.. And the 84 is in line with the load of the vehicle. So guessing it should be okay :thumbsup

It wont be the same - I had some 45 profile tyres on the exige instead of the 50s and it scraped a lot more at the front over speedbumps etc than on the 50s. It also understeered more.

the 45/50 is a percentage of the width of the tyre so going from 50 to 45 will drop the car close to 10mm

hmmmmmmm that changes it slightly.... 10mm is quite a lot considering how low the car already is!

Back to the drawing board :blackeye

Does your Exige have ABS.....?

If so it will ca confuse the wheel speed sensors and may trigger the ABS at the wrong time or not at all....

Had a similar problem with a peugot a while back, the abs released the brakes every time I slowed below 5mph down for a junction.....
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Yup it does indeed !

Investigating different tyres at the moment. May just buy a full set of T1-Rs as originally planned to avoid any hassle
