And so it begins.....
Saturday 25th March: Destination Barnsley
Well, off down south with my trusty mate Dave (the guy who's helping me with this and actually knows what he's doing!) Managed Glasgow to Barnsley in 3.5 hours, which I thought was decent going....
Had a good chat with the seller - who's just completed a self build Honda conversion, which looked absoulutely fantastic. Good lad and tells me the history of the engine/car and gives me a good look about the engine itself. Happy, I proceed to hand over the greenbacks and we manhandle in into the boot of the Merc.
Slight problem no. 1. It's not going in any time soon.... Hangs up on the plenum. Thankfully, Dave is an accomplished mountaineer and knows one end of a knot from another, so we end up with it mounted thus:
The looks I got for my twin engined Merc on the way home....
Anyway - uneventful drive up the road and dropped off the wee beauty in the top secret construction facility:
(spots on the plenum are raindrops - not corrosion!)
Well, she's a VVC which has done 25k miles and been lightly ported to produce 167BHP on the standard plenum, 52mm TB and the standard ECU.
Over the next couple of weekends, I'll be ripping out the old engine, stripping a few ancilliaries off it, plumbing in a PRRT stat, mounting my TB's and rebuilding the wiring loom for this engine...
First work takes place nexxt weekend and I'll post up how it goes (with piccies)

Very minor hi-jacking of the thread - but you mentioned a 52mm TB. What's the standard size? Mandy's has one of those plastic efforts at the moment!
Cheers & Sorry

48mm is standard... I've got a 48mm ally one kicking about if you want it? Minor beer-tokenage only (gotta pay for this bloody engine somehow)

What is the plan for the VVC engine, put it in as stock with your TBs or change cams / porting etc ?
You going to do a fully diary with man hours (not man whores) spent (hmm spent man whores) and costings ?

More tech info to follow as it happens.... ('cos it's actually already been posted in another thread

)
Good idea about the totals for hours and costs... Will tot that up as we go along (must remember, never let the g/f see this forum...)

Tell me about it, I have a spread sheet I only look at when doing my receipts. As of last year when the car was paid off that I could have bought a brand new Exige outright for the cost of my S1 and 5 years of ownership
Going to go for a Lawrence Webcam ? HMm Shug cam with man spent man whores being totted up...

The words "Shug" and "Webcam" really shouldn't be mixed.... Can't imagine the Google results on that search!

Right Saturday's update...
Now, I've got some good pics and I took them with an actual camera (as opposed to my phone) to get good quality... Seems I've left the camera at my g/f's place though....
Still, pics to follow, but I can give you the lowdown on what we did.
We didn't manage to get a huge amount done in any case. For a variety of boring reasons, we didn't get started till mid afternoon and I had to be at a ceilidh that evening, so we had a couple of hours to make a start.
Clam off then. Undertray off, get the rear of the car in the air with axle stands and then get the rear wheels & liners out. That's the easy bit. The rest of the job wasn't too bad actually, but I can see how it could be a complete pig if you had more duff bolts than I. Tthe two rearmost bolts in the boot (I have the later fibreglass boot) were spinning, so required use of mr angle grinder, but the others came out fine. 4 in the bootlid gutter, 4 in the door checks, 2 behind the seatbelt mounts and 2 to the front of the rear wheel arches. Then unscrew the fuel cap filler surround and poke the filler through the hole...
Next it's a test-lift to make absolutely sure there's nothing else holding on the clam and it's off and up against the wall.
Also had a root around the loom that came with my engine - now I was told it was incomplete, so there's no problem, but I think I'm going to get a replacement loom. There are some plugs missing and just too many wires are gone. Added to the fact that it's been sitting with the connectors corroding for 6 months and it's a recipie for an electrical gremlin nightmare. I've got a loom sitting at a scrapper down south waiting on the nod - so I think they'll get a call tomorrow.
Interesting job actually - the loom for the VVC has 2 ECU plugs, which need rewired into one for the Emerald. Dave Walker has sent the crib sheet for this, so shouldn't pose a problem. ECU also needs sent back to base to be reprogrammed to handle the VVC inputs.
I'll try and find the bloody camera and give you some photos next! May be doing some more work some evenings this week and I hope to get it finished this weekend. That's all dependant on stuff arriving, so we'll see.

Good effort fellah......
Looking fwd to the photos........plenty of detail on prrt fitting please.

?

Standard VVC mech, with Emerald and DTH TB's. The Emerald now controls the VVC gubbins, so I should be looking at 180-190bhp

First - boot carpet out, exposing the mods made for my airbox...
Most of the clam bolts were fine, just a couple needed 'persuasion'
Inside the boot - looking at the locations for the 3 LHS bolts (plus loom, which unplugs at this point)
Clam off!
The remnants of the VVC loom that I'm gonna have to bin:
Tonight's job - hubs coming off (replacing wheel bearings while we're in there)
Shot of location for remote stat (for Baggy)
More this weekend!
