Engine Management Light

Post by sam » Sun May 11, 2008 7:32 pm

Out driving today up the Causeway coast when the bloody light starting flashing (misfire) so I pulled over and turned the car off for a few minutes. Started her up again and the light was on constant (emission fault?) so carried on as normal without any spirited driving, got to the destination, went about our business and when we came back to start the car the light had gone out. Drive back was uneventful.
Do I have cause for concern?

Sam.

Sam,

Post this in the Tecnical section and you will get an appropriate response from one of the guys who understand the mechanics and electronics in your car.

Might do......you need a code reader to see what the actual fault is.

[Moved to technical]

You need a code reader. It will also help us help you if you post your model details - i.e. S1/S2 K-series/Toyota engine, etc.

Depending on where you are either MMC, SLS or pretty much any respectable garage will have an OBD2 compliant code reader. Get the codes and post them up here - you should post the numbers as well as the wording because some of the codes are model specific - e.g. P7002 etc.

Cheers,
Robin

Sam,

If you don't have access to a code reader if you let us know where you live there are a few guys on here who have them or your local garage can plug it in and give you the codes. The port is in the passenger footwell.

Hi guys
thanks for help, live in northern Ireland so not so local.
Anyway the car is a 2005 54 111R (toyota).
I guess a code reader is the way forward but any other help would be good.
Sam.

Really depends. The Mil will have been caused by the misfire. What caused the misfire can't really be diagnosed over the internet without more details - hence the need to find out exactly what the error code is. As robin says, go to any decent garage, have them plug intheir reader (it's designed to be a standard tool to make this sort of thing easier) and get them to give you exactly what they code reader says - that info can be cross referenced to try and trace the issue...

As a starting point check the oil level - the Toyota engine is not very tolerant of low oil levels. If you have a non-standard air filter, chances are the filter won't have been cleaned/replaced since new (not part of the normal service if it's a 3rd party product). There were a lot of MIL issues caused by 3rd party exhausts too. It only gets more expensive after that, so here's hoping ;-)

Cheers,
Robin
