MMC Skimming

Post by BiggestNizzy » Wed Apr 16, 2008 2:16 pm

I have just bought myself a set of MMC's off ebay.
http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/vie ... =2&t=13851
Thing is I am at work now I have a CNC lathe, diamond tooling and the boss is just off out to watch the football

Should I give them a skim ? as these are fleabay and I have no history it would seem like a good idea.

is their anything I need/should know ? or should I just not do it

Do not skim them if they do not need it, it is a last resort, and I have seen no reports yet of the outcome or whether they still work.

If they are in good condition they should have a smooth, dullish, grey finish, with no grooves or evidence of contact with bare metal pads. Also no pitting which can also occur. Light corrosion does not matter as it will rub off.

If you can take good digital photos of them, then let me have them and I can check on their condition.

ps just realised that they are the Lutus ones that I was also bidding on. One looks as if it has a groove in it, but that should not affect it much.

If the other sides of the disks are similar to the good one, then I would use them as is.

If my memory serves me correctly, I dont think you can skim MMC discs, they are very hard and will ruin most skimming machines.

Tis possible Paul, Stu did one of mine, but requires specialised skimming equipment.

It came up almost like new, he did not charge me for it, he must have a touch of Chinese blood in him as they revere their OAP's, so do not know what the Commercial cost would be.

Nizzy

As a collector of MMC discs, I have them on both N1 and N3, I have some that are both scored from contact with the caliper, and pockmarked from lord knows what.

If you have the equipment to skim them, then we could try it on a couple of mine as there is nothing to lose, I can not use them as they are.

no problem I couldn't manage a good pic as I only had my phone on me

their is a very small groove (looks worse than it feels)
I will skim them up we have diamond impregnated tips that should cut it no problem and if that fails we will just use diamonds. if you can get them down to me in deepest Ayrshire I will skim them up when I do mine.

Thanks, will bring them down with me to the next KH. Clare just left to go back to Uni for two weeks, if I had thought she could have taken them down with her.

That groove on yours does not count, so if the other surfaces are good I would be inclined not to skim them. However you can experiment on mine as there is nothing to loose that way.

Cheers

This is an example of a bad one. Contact with the rivets holding the splashguard plate on. The other side is fine.

they look fecked :!: but we should be able to clean them up, as long as the structure of the material doesn't get effected and their is plenty of material on. like the shampoo - nice and easy :thumbsup
