OBD II Cable

Post by Kev » Fri Mar 07, 2008 9:41 am

I've just bought this off ebay for the Audi http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 26otn%3D12 and wondered, because its an 16 pin OBD II connector would it work on the Lotus with the right software?

If the car is 16 pin, the cable should work AFAIK, as to softwarem, I'd imagine you'd need to get something that will speak to the type of ECU you have, Roer, Toyota, Lotus?

On a related topic - where is the diagnostic plug on an S1 Elise?

I have a Sykes Picakavnt ACR with Rover 3 pod, and hoping I can plug into the Liz to have a looksee?

Cheers

Someone will likely be along to correct me soon, but I reckon I read somewhere that some Elises had the port at the back either behind the rear number plate, or there is a hole above the plate...

Kev

I bought the same one sometime ago for the Audi TT and downloaded the VAG-COM software from Ross-Tech, but did not have any success with the setup/run procedure on the notebook, so could not check it out when plugged into the OBD connector on the car.

Let me know if you get it working, and whether I have missed anything.

No idea what a Sykes Picakavnt ACR is, but the S1 diagnostic plug isn't OBD compatible I don't believe :? Need to use the LotusScan tool...

You should be able to se VAGCOM itself to read and reset generic ODBII fault codes on Elises that support ODBII . . . the cables are generic, and VAGCOM also has a generic ODBII component which works on non VAG cars just fine (in my experience), only problem with the cheap ebay cables (I've found) is that they don't always work with all the controllers in some cars . . . so YMMV . . . Tut you are probebly using to new a version of VAGCOM, if you have a USB/SERIAL cable then you need to use an older version (409 ??) - it's all on the website . . .

Thanks Fergus.

It's a USB connection, the 16 pin plug is marked OBD Factory and KKL V409. I am actually using Release 409.1-US software downloaded from VAG-COM.

Problem is that the USB cable will not do an automatic install and put in the drivers. It comes up with the Hardware Wizard USB <-> Serial, can not find the necessary software, but then will not install from what should be the driver location.

The downloading instructions are for their Ross-Tech cable, which should be recognised automatically, but gives the usual manual procedure if not. Unfortunately this does not work for mine as there do not appear to be any drivers in the Vag-Com folder when you direct the install wizard there.

Could be a duff cable, but will wait and see how Kev gets on.

Chris

Could I try yours please on my notebook to compare with mine?

Cheers

Tut,

I bought this converter for my Emerald http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000KD7NX4

Works a treat but it was recommended off a few guys on SELOC. Comes with a driver disc for the converter.

Tut, you'll need the driver disk for the cable . . . it's nothing to do with VAGCOM . . .

I have both an ebay cheapo del and a ross-tech cable, the ebay special doesn't work on all cars (that I need it to) and does require a driver disk, the ross-tech one, of course, just works . . . but then it is more costly . . . still . . . it's more than paid for itself in repairs and diagnostics to my audis over the years . . .

Cheers Fergus. I wondered when I bought it about drivers, but none of the ones on eBay seem to include a CD with them on.

Appreciate that they are cheapies, I paid £8 but they are sold by the thousands and feedback seemed good, so presumed that they worked. Also I did not have the knowledge that there were options other than these and the specialised dealer ones. Having checked Ross-Tech I see that you can buy their cable kit for $450, but for me it was just a one off check after having the ECU reprogrammed.

Do you have a driver disk, as you say that your cheapo does work on some models?

Thanks Andy, I have the same USB to Serial cable as yours, but that is for use if you do not have a serial port on your notebook to connect to the Emerald.

As Fergus says, the OBD2-USB cable will probably work, but it needs the USB drivers on CD for installation or it will not be recognised.

The advert should have made it clear that the drivers would be required from another source as they were not supplied.

I found the mini CD, I must have used it to install on the Notebook last year, but had forgotten. However the Program had not worked then which is why I went no further.

However installed the cable on my PC from the CD and it went through fine. Showing as USB High Speed Serial Convertor in Device Manager and as working properly.

However the same result when I open the 409 software program, for first time use you have to click on Options then Test, and it should create a Config file, but it then flashes up that the Ross-Tech USB Interface Not Found, and I can go no further. QED.
