can't get a wheel off

Any (constructive !) tips ?
Went to change the brake pads this afternoon and can't get the front wheel off. Starting to think it's been welded on !
Are the s2 wheels flat mounted or are there any collars or anything ? Could be wheel has never been off (4 years old/14k miles) as looks like it is still on original tyres and pads.
Tried hammering at hub and also across the spokes via a piece of wood. Even put a rope throughspokes and almost yanked the car off the jack. Tried shouting and swearing at it too, but that didn't work either.
Don't want to damage the alloy or anything else behing the wheel.
Suggestions ?

Long piece of wood behind the tyre and a hammer. Make sure you don't hit anything other than the wood with the hammer

Kettle of hot water over the middle section and then as nizzy describes - give it a kicking.
Make sure that you don't kick it off the jack & rotate the wheel after every second kick or so.

Wheel should really be in A&E the kicking it has had tonight !
Hadn't heard of the hot water thing - might try that in the morning Mac.
(What are these bolt things Nizzy talks about I should remove ?

Cheers for all the advice guys and offers of...err... help
Stuck the kettle on for Mac's tip and while waiting for it to boil I slackened the wheel nuts and did a few fast runs over the cobbled rumble strip at the entrance to our road. Got some slight movement after that, enough to kick it off. No kettles (or shotguns) required.
Cheers Tenkfeet.
