Stack temperature raised 3-4 degrees when I put heater on...

Post by Corranga » Mon Jan 21, 2008 11:17 am

My good old S1 Elise Stack temperature gause raises 3-4 degrees when I put the demister/heater on, is this normal?

I can turn the heater on (+3) off (-3) on (+3).. you get the idea. This is instant. Never realised Elises had buttons to control the dials, can I wind the window half way down to adjust the speedo too? ;)

I'm not too worried about it, assuming it's not a symptom of some further Stack failure...?

Like Richard said, this is symptomatic of a bad earth.

My exige does this too. Heater + lights = instant 3 degree increase on the dash :)

Mine goes upto 105 on N3 with the fan on max and headlights on, though they are rally bulbs.

However this is a false temperature indication, as Dan says probably down to earthing, though it is common on early S1's. However it does turn my fan on.

It's a design fault . . . that would have been difficult for Lotus to resolve cheaply given the standard engine sensors on the K series . . .

The more load you draw from the battery the worse it will become . . .

Nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys, will check the earthing, and otherwise ignore the temp gauge until it starts reading really high numbers.

So, since the temp and fuel gauges are unreliable and slightly random, is the speedometer actually worth bothering with? ;)

hi,

try checking the wiring loom goingto the fuse box in the front on passenger side, ours had rubbed through the insulation and was shorting on the bodywork this might be your problem, you can see some rubbing on the chassis as well.

Speedo is generally extremely accurate . . . being fully digital . . . unlike the crappy analogue fuel and temp gauges . . .
