Electrical issue/s

The car hasn't ran for a few months since it's been off the road. I'd charged the old battery (that had been completely drained) but didn't seem to have charged properly when I tried it in the car yesterday.

Got a new battery yesterday evening, and have just tried it in the car, but it's thrown up the same symptons.

When the car is alarmed, instead of just illuminating the flasher display on the stack, all of the warning lights are displayed at the same time the indicators flash.

When the key is turned to start the car, the stack lights appear normal but the fuel pump can't be heard and another pumping noise, which i suspect may be the ICAV can be heard from the middle (I think) of the engine bay. This speeds up when the key is turned fully to ignition.

The battery is of course connected the correct way round and the only electrical work i've carried out to the car is to replace the indicator stalk unit as the old one didn't cancel.

Any ideas please?

S1 or S2?

If its an early S1 switch off the alarm with the key and use the immobilizer bypass dongle...

Any later than 97 and I have no idea...

S1 of course :wink:

I've tried the immobiliser dongle, no joy.

It's not the ICAV that's been making the chattering noise, it's been this unit here:

Which according to the manual is the relay module (multi function unit). There is no signs of dampness, wetness or damage to the outside of the unit.

Forgot to mention in the first post, the lights (including the back lighting) in the stack flash as this unit chatters.

Have you checked the earth straps for the battery and engine ?

If you have jump leads you could try putting the earth of the batterty to the engine . See what happens .

I am sure an expert will be along shortly.

If when you turn the key to the start position you get all the lights flicking on and off and there is clickety-click from the back then your battery is flat or the earth straps are so corroded that they won't allow current to pass.

If your car has the master alarm key under the pax side dash then the touch key should disarm the immob. If your car doesn't have the master alarm key then the touch key forms part of the new transmitter learning procedure and you will probably need to complete that before the immobiliser will work again, now that you have started it.

So, you might now have a double failure - lack of current to engine bay, immobiliser requiring key learning.

Cheers Robin. It's getting a bit late and dark now etc... so will wait until tomorrow to have a look. I haven't checked the earths so far. TBH, the alarm seems to be functioning properly. Will also get Nizzy's MFRU to check that in the car if it's not the earths.

When the unit is chattering and the dash lights flashing, i noticed at the end there, the dipped beam is flashing in time as well, despite not being on.

It was the earths on the battery :oops:

It'll take a light the next time i'm footering with electrical bits - they were pretty corroded and covered in gunk.

All is well now though, and the car's sitting purring away as I type
