Sensibly priced alternator

Post by james » Mon Dec 31, 2007 10:28 am

Chaps

the car is about to be hibernated and theres a couple of jobs that need doing. Ali said at the last service that my alternator is getting noisy and it certainly is so it needs to be changed.

Looking at the price of a Lotus alternator is a big bad joke. Is there a Rover alternator that I can fit? Surely its the same?!

I dont need the Lotus badge if its just a K series alternator I need. Or does anyone know where I can get it reconditioned?

Thanks 8)

Also Im assuming its probably a total swine to change.

Mine went last month, think the alternator cost about approx £148 + VAT, for a bosch one. In total it cost £300 to supply and fit it. Just waiting for the AA to send me £275 for it.

Yup.....

Came off an immaculate S2 engine with about 30k on the clock, which was removed by the previous owner for a Honda one....

I've got a few other S2 bits too.... I should really get round to selling them or something... but you never know what you might need in the future...

Cheers,

Dave.

30k should not be a problem with a alternator
noisy ones are often due to the belt being over tight when serviced, it destroys the bearings
most motorfactors can send them away for rebuild and you get a g-tee with the rebuilt alternator

I know a guy that could probably recondition it in Dundee, he's done starter and alternator reconditioning for years.

http://petermooreautoelectrics.co.uk/

He gave up his garage due to rising rent prices, but still does the occassional unit from home. Probably best to email or call his mobile, i'm not sure he kept the garage number.
