Wheel Bearing shot?

Post by Rich H » Wed Feb 08, 2006 7:06 pm

I have a slight noise from the front l/h wheel, only noticed it when my radio packed up. Sounds like rotating quiet shshshshsh. Checked the obvious (disks, brakes, rocks, wheel nuts) I'm thinking wheel bearing gone or going....

Anyone done one DIY or worth getting it done in a garage?

Cheers

I dismantled it all, then took the upright to a garage, got it pressed in, then took it home and re-assembled. Cost me less than 50 incl the bearing, so saved a small bit (but I learnt a lot!)

In fact I think garage price (brunty) was 75+Vat to do it, so a definite saving to be made!

I've been toying with changing the ball joints too while I'm in there. Anyone got a ball joint tool I could borrow?

Is this the right part:

Just found my service manual, looks like I will have m12 hub nuts, should I replace these too? I'll have to check with the wheel off....

Dont know anything about hub nuts but thats the right bearing. TBK 661 is what Stephen told me to get, that eBay price is as good as you`ll get it, I paid about that give or take a couple of quid.

Perhaps think about slapping on a morris minor clutch if you need something more rugged than the standard part. I think the standard one is off a Model-T Ford.

Bearing is more of a rumble than a shshsh noise.... Sure there's nothing between spash guard and disk (even a build up of brake dust can cause a noise here)

Stephen, I might take you up on that later...

Getting both front bearings done while they do the clutch. Figured I may as well be off the road once for a week than 3 times over 2 months.... :D

Cheers gents
