Dropping the fuel tank.

Post by ABZ-Elise » Wed Nov 14, 2007 10:14 pm

As soon as I get back from offshore I'm planning to take the fuel tank out my car to replace the fuel pump. From what I've gathered its a pig of a job but as I don't fancy cutting the chassis so I'll have to do it the right way.

Is there anything I'll have to watch out for when doing it? and is there a right a right and a wrong way to do it?

Cheers,

Kev.

IIRC the RLC had a tank change due to leakage. Andy/Shug/Robin would be your best bet for help!

its not that bad a job
run the car very low on fuel before starting
can be done single handed use axle stands to raise car very high ( chock f wheels ) and trolly jack to lower tank dont forget to dissconect the fuel pump hoses before lowering the tank (plastic hoses) from inside the car
fuel pipes are easy with arch linner out, hand brake and gear cables disconected and outa the way

clean the rust/ water from tank whilst off and use very very fine wet/dry paper then switch cleaner on the fuel sender contacts and resistor wires ? it made my usless gauge work again as it had gone quite manky over the years with the fuel ( works like a scalelextric controller ) but be very gentle and rub same direction as the wires

Had my tank out recently to change the rear brake lines. MOT man thought they looked dangerous - they were fine as it turns out...

I found the hardest part was removing and refitting the fuel filler neck hoses.

After pulling out my passenger seat to disconnect the braided lines as they had corroded at the fittings did I not snap the crappy plastic tank connections, of course I have nearly a full tank, and the engines out, any tips to make life easier or is it going to be an absolute c-unit of a job?

Disconnect filler cap, handbrake and gear cables, anything else, don't have the workshop manual or is it online anywhere?

Every job on this car has taken twice the initial estimate

Changed fuel pumps three times now on the S1 from the top, a one hour job. There is a round access hatch on top behind the pax seat held by four screws which gives access to the fuel pump. It is not part of the chassis and all you have to do is cut out a small tear drop shaped extension to clear the inlet pipe and you can take it out.

Put in the replacement and stick the cut out back on.

Ok, I have the access panel there off already, that involved a grinder and a dremal but that's another story
I did think about cutting it as didn't look like you needed to cut away much, if it's a standard bodge i will just carry on, although will need to plug this broken fuel lines as the smells strong

Around a 2" tear drop shaped hole on the middle of the car side.

Just to clarify that's a seperate hole or an extension of the existing opening?
