They shouldn't be rattling.

the back brake mechanism has a "wind on" function to eliminate play in the handbrake

Definately not. Sounds like the sliding pin might be jammed, making the inner pad push but the outer just sits there rattling.

Get the wheel off and see if you can get them to shift with a bit of a tap (avec hammer, protecting the caliper with a block of wood)

Then get the pads out of them - guide here:

http://www.elise-faq.info/content/brakes/padchange.php

Move the caliper along it's slide - you should see the rubber gaiter, is it split? Now, there should be a seal kit which gives you this gaiter, but that's a job for MMC to find (the caliper is shared with the Esprit)

Worst case, if the slides are too corroded, could be a new caliper or two.

Now, that's the most likely thing, can't think of any other reason you could move the outer pads....

sliding caliper is also the same as the Renault Laguna.

As Shug says if it's the outer pad that rattles then it sound like the slider has siezed.

Bigger issue could be the it's siezed on and has worn the inner pad down.

Either way - it's a job for sooner rather than later.

Ah, well, the jury's still out on the Laguna thing... I think Rox got some Laguna seals for his and they didn't fit. Tho, I think the pin seal did, just not the piston seals. But if it's a replacement caliper, the Laguna might very well not be the one you need.

Was Rox after the piston seal? I thought it was only the slide seal he was after!

If i remember right the last time they were changed the pads rattled right away and the pin had just been put back in.

Cheers

Craig,

It's not the pin in the middle - it's the big slider pins at the back we are talking about - they should have wee rubber boots over them

Cheers

My Green stuff rears rattled until I changed them out (I just replaced them with greenstuff again) & they stopped.

It might of been cos they were a bit thin (still had 2-3mm left) but I think putting a wee bit of copperslip on the backs and pad edge contact points did the trick)

Just found this on Exiges.com

http://www.classicbrakes.co.uk/

These guys can supply a complete seal kit for the rear calipers on the Elise. This includes the dust boot for the sliding pin. Believe it's also ITRO 20odd quid, which is nice. 8)
