Exige roof leak

Post by dezzy » Sun Sep 16, 2007 2:34 pm

In the heavy rain on Thursday night and then again today, the lining inside my roof has got really damp. On Thursday, it was mainly in the front corner at each side near the wee drip catcher thingy (i.e. near the front of each side window). Today, it's still damp in that area and also right along the lining near the join of roof and side windows. Really damp, but not dripping thankfully.

Any other Exige owners had this kind of leaking? I tried tightening the roof bolts on Thursday night but it's not made much difference. Not sure if it's the roof itself or the seal of the window with the roof. There's no water coming down the inside of the window, which is really confusing me. If it was the window, I would expect that. :scratch

It's off to MMC for its 1000 mile service on Thursday and I'll get them to look at it, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas or if there are any adjustments I can make myself?

Cheers,

Why?

Get MMC to sort it gratis - it's a new car and it's faulty :)

Will definitely be doing that Shug, but don't want the car to be a swimming pool by Thursday! :D

I think I may have tracked it down though . . .

It's stopped raining so I've had the chance to go out and look at it. The windows seem fine and the roof appears to be sitting in the frame nice and snug. However, the black trim rubber U-channel strip along each side of the roof seems a wee bit loose and when I peel it back a bit with my fingernail, it looks wet inside. I think it may be seeping in there, and through to the inner lining.

So, I've dried off that bit of the roof and applied some electrical insulation tape nice and tightly along it. If it rains later and it doesn't get any worse, then I think that'll be the problem. Will just leave the tape on until Thursday and get MMC to re-seal the rubber u-channel or order two new strips of it.

Mine does the same occasionally, doesn't do it all the time its raining so might be the window not being properly closed thats doing it.

My Elise leaked in the same place only when i had the hard top on - the seals on the soft top were slightly longer and were a lot snugger fit into that U shaped area you are mentioning..

I layered mine with some tape-over-tape and it did the trick nicely

 The very first thing I checked after it had been raining was the boot . . . ! They must have improved it on later models, as it was thankfully nice and dry! :D

It will be silicon on the rear spoiler screws that sorts that. I also get occaisional water in the cockpit but not often.
