Giles - just remembered I've a K series sitting at SLS!

Cant quite recall what the story was regarding its history, but i could find out for you?

I think it got the Sport 160 intake on it - but have never driven it, and only seen it once

Hi All

Finally getting around to start this work, I'm hoping to have some time at home from the middle of February, and I don't have any real deadline to get the work done, the car can just sit in the garage until I've finished. I plan to rebuild the engine following Robins suggestions, so thanks to those who had mentioned possible engines, but I'll stick with what I have right now, unless of course I make a right arse of things and need a new engine

Robin, do you have details of what I need to do to get the KR1 spec head work done, does this need a new head or just getting the old one worked on, apologies for what may seem like dumb questions.

Rebuilding a stock K is a very simple job, just remember to get the head hardness tested with an accurate, freshly calibrated digital hardness tester, do not use a head reading less than 95brinnell. No amount of wishful thinking, PRTs or anything else will prevent you having "HGF" if you use a soft head. Remember also to use an OE gasket, despite some internet talk the Chinese gasket will not work on legacy engines, the ex Rover engineers now working for SAIC are 100% against it's use, and recently reprimanded X-Parts for advertising it as a solution [it is a costed down gasket anyway] and aftermarket gaskets will fail too.

Good luck.

Following a bit of reading, a useful chat with Stu earlier today, and a telephone call to Sabreheads, I think I'm nearly ready to go, just need to sort something out to protect the rear clam while it's off the car, then I hope I can get started, I'm sure it will be a slow process, but I should get there in the end, but not before I think of some more dumb questions.

Does anybody have any experience of this lot,

Just want to make sure it's genuine Lotus parts before I order anything, but they seem to have the stuff I need, Stu was also looking into a possible supplier.

Brilliant for parts identification, think I bought a few basic bits from them last year Giles. Robin appeared to rate them also but not clear if based on purchase experience or simply the online parts identification resource :-)

What spec is your Sabre head then ;-)

Thanks Campbell, I was impressed by the parts identification, and it will make things very easy to just order all the stuff from them, just need to get the engine in bits to check what grade all the important parts are.

I use to buy all my standard engine parts from Land Rover. Gaskets, oil filters, belts, bolts etc. All OE and wasn't to pricey, they'd also give me a discount if I asked nicely. A lot of parts they kept in stock and if they didn't have it they only take a couple of days to get it.

Thanks, I was also thinking about that, however I contacted deroure.com and they assured me that their parts are all OE, no after market stuff, I'll probably go with them.

Deroure are great for parts, not always the cheapest but pretty close for OE parts.
Ordered loads for the Esprit from them mostly because of the linked parts catalogue.
Customer service is pretty good too.

Pentland Land Rover have provided me with some useful standard bits, as have Pentland Components (no relation!) in Sighthill (branches elsewhere too).

PLR have moved from base at Craiglockhart to the "motor village" or whatever it's called, at Newbridge off M8 / M9 underpass junc.
