Won't start...but battery fully charged
Went as follows...
Brought his multimeter.
We had a coffee and a gossip.
Inspected the wiring to the starter and the battery.
Tested supply to the starter, was down at 10v ish, a bit low so suggests a weak battery (yet the trickle charger said was fine).
Tested the voltage at the battery, also 10-11v so definitely not at full strength but no earthing probs.
Hooked up the jump leads to the Golf Diesel (quote - "you could jump start the Space Shuttle with that thing) and cranked, started first pop.
Result = weak battery.
Retested battery while idling and while cranking, figures below norms so Robin concluded maybe one cell of the six had died.
New battery shortly to be acquired from local garage, £27.50 inc VAT!! (Sorry Neil!!...that's Hunters in Linlithgow, btw, for future ref).

Cheers Campbell, that sounds like what I would have done and concluded, I was just curious if Robin had some wonder gadget to check out the individual cells on the battery. Or if he just used Jedi powers.

Neil,
I did hear about that
Sadly Hunters in Linlithgow look like they can supply one for £27.50 (including fitting...but I declined that part!!) and rumour has it Halfrauds relieved you of quite a bit more than that for yours?
My advice would be...stash yours, it will be needed soon enough!

is it size 0063? i take it that it fits in the car fine. I'm sure i read somewhere that finding a direct replacement is difficult. something about the clamp not being quite right and it being a bit*h to secure properly???mckeann wrote:if you need a battery, i bought one from halfords on sunday to put in my car, but i no longer need it.
any truth in that, or am i talking bol*ocks (as usual)..

Yeah - I recovered the wee plastic covers and the battery is as new, so you could well return it!mckeann wrote:yup, i had no option, only place we could get one on a sunday at short notice. Might see if i still have the receipt and return it

I have a tester that goes across the posts ( from my batt lawnmower repair days ) , but as well as reading the gauge if a cell is dud it will bubble up instantlyMacK wrote:Cheers Campbell, that sounds like what I would have done and concluded, I was just curious if Robin had some wonder gadget to check out the individual cells on the battery.
