Can someone remind me which way softens the damping and which way hardens it . Anticlockwise to soften?

I think that might be my next job (free off the adjuster and find a few rattles) when I've finished some stuff on the house. I've kind of got used to it's ride now and it works so well on my bi-annual track day I'll leave the springs as is ;)
Pretty much the position I took, except I got MMC to free off the adjusters and fix the rattles ... it is way easier that way :-)

Cheers,
Robin

If you imagine you're lying underneath the damper looking up at the adjuster, then yes, anti-clockwise to soften. Assuming you have the adjuster at the lower wishbone end (I think it might be possible to fit the other way up).

I think the big rattle may be the undertray. You know the bolts that screw into the under side of the car along the sill? What do they screw into?

They don't seem particularly tightenable. As if the captured nut is less captured than it should be... Any ideas?

(Yes MMC would be easier but it's not taxed and, well, I wanted to fiddle.)

Yes. The three on the side go into threaded C clips.

Those are pushed over the shear panel ends I believe.

I had a problem with the holes enlarging so ended up using nuts, bolts and washers.

Check handbrake cable rattling off the top of the tray (if it's routed the same as the S1) Bit of foam padding strategically placed works wonders.

It's probably a latent mckeann breakage somewhere, you'll still have a few years of them ahead yet.

If you can be arsed to remove the undertray completely, then see if the rattle goes away - if it doesn't it'll be much easier to find now that you know it is not the undertray ;-)

Tray already off. Found oil leak (all over linkages). No rattle with tray off, next step shocks off*

*OK Actual next step, try to take off shocks, fail, plead with Woody or Nizzy to come round and help. You know based on previous experience...
