I would like to think any mechanic would have the know-how to do this kind of basic stuff?
So would I, but know it's not the case. Probably why Honda/Lotus put Onboard Diagnostics on the ECU in the first place. I see no reason to remove it.

Anyhoo, thanks for the information on the Hondatas. All clear

And there's me just gone and bought an obd reader! Plugged it in yesterday and got the codes but not deciphered it yet. Fairly sure it's the lambda as I can see through the rear mesh that the wire is melted to the exhaust! Pretty good clue I reckon! Cars still running fine though

reason the decision was taken not to connect it is that under VOSA proposals doe MOT changes, it included an OBD check, if the message from the ECU was NOT what the car was homologated with, it's an instant fail.

Honda ECU will say it's a Honda, Lotus ECU says it's a Lotus.

Yes, they have yet to implement this, but at the time, they were telling us it was slated for 2011 changes.

now, from my perspective, what do you think a customers going to say when they book their car in for an MOT and then fail due to this?

Fair enough, where did you read this from - if the message from the ECU was NOT what the car was homologated with, it's an instant fail

I read what VOSA proposed and the only mention on ECU's was something about illegal chipping (whatever that is), but they quickly responded saying this would not be enforced/or don't know how to enforce the law.

Hope it never comes to light, as I own a Caterham now with a Rover ECU as standard (VHPD) and now an Emerald.

Did not read it, it was a conversation (by letters) with VOSA a few years back.

What you are reffering to is a step on from that, the manufactures are the ones pushing this stuff...
