Wee light flashes (CAT?)
Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
remove the leads and use a hairdryer, then remove the plugs and dry again.
had to do it a few times on my old clio

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
I take it I can seal the cover with a gasket then or some clear silicon?? I dont want to have to dry my leads and spark plugs everytime it rains or I wash the car! Thanks for your help guys

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
the top the HT lead should seal it well enough, if not maybe put a little grease round the top to make it seal better

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
Duct tape over the top of the plug cover
Water in the plugs is a big problem on the 7

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
Leads removed, wells blown out with compressed air, liberal spray of GT85, leads back in - top cover reinstalled with a smear of grease to help the seal.
I'm not convinced that the problem is solved 100% - I think there are other forces at work

Yeah today was a lot better but it did do it once. I think I may order a new set of spark plugs for it, that may be the problem. It is only ever when the engine is idle for about 30 seconds or more

Plugs or leads possible. Leads would be my first call on a car of that age... Mine were nasty, but took them off (one at a time
) and clean the contacts + smear with some vaseline. Did the trick.

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
ok, you do have the misfire detection kit installed, otherwise, the light simply can't flash
What I've seen more then once is the coil being on the way out. I've had one engine which really didn't want to stop misfiring, replaced all, didn't work. Ended up taking the coil off, putting a plate of sheet metal (very thin) behind the coil and have more or less wrapped the coil in this sheet metal (and the leads as far as the sheet extended.
This really helped on this car, never had any problems again.
Problem is.. it can be anything in the high voltage circuit.. it can be the coil pack, it can be the HT leads and it can be the plugs (although I wouldn't suspect the plugs that soon)
When you decide to replace the HT leads, don't always try to 'upgrade' them as I found the magnecor uprated jobbies not to be as insensitve to radiation as the original HT leads. Original (rover) leads are the way to go for a VVC imho.
It's a bit of a bugger, but if cleaning doesn't help, replacing the leads or coil is the only way to find out what's wrong. (oh.. and one certain mr. Murphy has made a deal with the supplier (;)) that whatever you choose to do first, it will always be the other component that's failing

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
Mis fire kit is fitted - I think it's the irrdium plugs that the last owner fitted TBH.
I know that folk have had issues with the Magnicor leads causeing issue despite being better, and think that these plugs might be effecting it in a similar way.

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
I suppose the spark plugs would be the cheaper option to fit then? Ill mabye go out and purchase new ones and give them a go and see if it makes much difference. It does make sense in my head the way you explained it Mac.

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
It's important to use either the plugs required by your owner's manual or an equivalent part as identified by a proper cross reference (e.g. http://www.ngk.co.uk can cross reference from various manufacturers spark plugs to their own products).
If you want to understand why this matters, you'll need to read up on transmission lines and impedance matching ... suffice to say it matters.
For EU2 VVC owners (that's all the S1 VVC cars) another option besides shielding the HT system is to modify the loom and fit the plug top coils from the EU3 engine. This removes the majority of the HT run length and thus minimises radiation and thus induced currents in the electronics (the root cause of the problem, as I understand it). I have never tried this, but I think it should be possible.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Wee light flashes (CAT?)
Ok that made no sense to me as a newbie to this sort of thing. Yesterday even taking leads and spark plugs was all new to me. Far as I have went technically with a car is replacing the discs and brakes on my pug and doing an oil change

YEAh same problem on way home from work today 10 times worse when I started it it has been raining all day, I think the water seems to be running down the leads and making it into them somehow. Is there any way of sealing this?
