None. Like I said above, the woodruff key doesn't exist
As you can see, it resisted being removed (damage at 2 o'clock and elsewhere).
It would be fine to test that the engine works, but isn't a permanent solution - I would guess that it now won't be balanced well and that it might fracture at some point in the future.
I cannot get to Fd's engine right now - I need to clear some space and then squirt it with some WD 40 to help remove it without weapons of mass destruction.
I will get to it on Thursday I think - shall I post up this one in the meanwhile?
Cheers,
Robin

Actually, just looked at it some more, and all the damage is to a steel ring that is pressed onto the back - the pulley itself is sound.
With a punch you could flatten out the damage and it would deffo be safe to run (though still not completely balanced

).
Cheers,
Robin

That would be great thanks. I'll get to it with fine peening hammers
The main thing is the important bit is intact, i.e. the 2 raised lobes with the phantom woodruff cavity...
It'll be like socks in the washing machine... somewhere in the world there must be a ginormous unexplained pile of woodruff keys
I wonder if the pulleys are a generic parts bin item....
Cheers,
Iain

I would imagine its a Rover part they wouldn't bother with a specific lotus one.

True, but I wonder if Rover used it as generic across the K Series and maybe the higher output engines needed the extra security of the woodruff... who knows!

The 190 engine doesn't come with one either it seems. I've looked at every Rover configuration of the K-series that I have a manual for and not one of them has a key.

Robin

I have a pulley here which has only the flat on the pulley and no gap (as perrobins pic).
It would appear there are more than one design of pulley - but I suspect either will do.
If there is insufficient play once the new pulley is fitted you can progress . . . else the crank damage may make getting accurate timing less easy . . .

The crank stub flat is pretty ropey machining it has to be said, but i'm a lot more comfortable knowing it's meant to be like that... horrible thoughts of butchered engine jobs requiring me to shell out lumps of cash on replacement motors.
It's one thing to take an engine out through choice, quite another when it's thrust on you through someone elses bodge job . . . thankfully that's not looking like the case in this instance.
I'll fit Neil's old pulley and see whether the timing can be sorted without loss of compression before panicking any further
Cheers,
Iain

Nope . . . if you're referring to my post . . .
Is Neil's stamped VVC ? 'cos the one I was looking at wasn't.

Fd
Mine's stamped VVT:
I'm not aware that Rover ever used the term Variable Valve Timing though? Maybe its a red herring

Do you have a pic of the inside of the toothed pulley?
