Brake Issue

Post by martins » Thu Jul 07, 2016 12:30 pm

OK.

S2 Exige 240S

Last time out at KH way back in May I had a brake 'issue' in that the offside rear calliper parted company from it mounting and rotated around the disk slightly. Did not do any real damage but needed some tlc from CMC and new pads, guide etc.

Have since hardly used the car. Drive up the A90 to Aberdeen and very little else.

Has AP disks and uprate callipers with CL5+ pads on the front.

Noticed the other day that the pads were rattling a bit which they had not done previously. No big problem. Last night when parking up there was also a loud 'clunk' and horrible 'snatch' feeling as I slowly stopped the car. This came from the front nearside corner. Did not have time to investigate fully. This morning same issue but only at slow speed with gentle application. Does not feel like the disk is warped and I did look to see if the disk was warped when I checked the wheel was on right last night. Appears strait. There does appear to be some pad transfer on the disk. Could this cause the clunk/snatch and if so how do I clean up the disks etc? If not the issue then any ideas???? Disks are nearly new. Done a couple of track days at KH and less than 1000miles. Only went on last November when both disks and pads replaced at CMC.

Have you taken the pads out for a look?

Was it CL5s that were suffering from the braking material coming off the backing plate? - would that cause those symptoms?

I doubt new discs would warp. Just my 2p

was speaking figuratively.....a little like 'sleeping' with my wife..... there is not much sleeping going on....well in fact of late there has been, but 20 years ago it was a different matter....queue Tut with a comment please....

Yes it was the CL's that were throwing their brake material off. Will be checking this as well....

Looks like a dirty weekend for me then.......yee haa

Unfortunately can not not rise to the occasion Martin, what with heart surgery, catheters, low blood pressure, not sure when the old boy will be back in action.

Update. Removed disks and cleaned up the pad transfer but that was not the problem. The problem was the age old CL issue of the pad coming away from the plate. Inside pad on the offside came out in 3 parts. 1 part back plate, 2 parts pad....Luckily it all stayed in place. Pads have only been in place since nov 2015 and done 1900 miles.

Anyone got a spare set of CL5+ front pads for an S2 Exige 240 running the 4 pot AP Racing callipers??

In my heart of hearts I suspected this may have been the issue, but wanted to believe otherwise. Bought the pads some time ago. Now trying to remember where I bought them from.....

Ho Hum....no damage done.....

Great minds etc

I wonder if there is any point in going direct to CL if you can't remember where you purchased them.

I think part of the issue is how old they are too. Possibly rust aiding separation?

Hah. Not rust. the pad did not really part from the backing plate. It more separate a Millimetre or 2 into the compound. Would post an image but have forgotten how to...doh...

Eliseparts weren't interested when I had the same issue, they simply referred me to a thread on seloc  Mine only had 1500-2000 miles on them max, with no track days.

I found them great pads, but never again
